The Unpreventable Bed

Nao paused before the door of the bedroom, looking up at the King expectantly. "Go in," Taiga said, "I think you'll like the new bed."

She hadn't been able to prevent it going in, which meant that she would be expected to sleep in it. Rook, Wataru, had warned her to try to have a place where she could stay far away from Taiga; it was good for her sanity. The fact that her King had allowed her to keep it was nothing short of amazing; but it was clear that her days of sleeping apart from the others was over.

The bed was very large; large enough for the four of them. Taiga had made it clear from the start that this particular group of Checkmate Four was family, if adopted family. Her children would be the King's children; likewise, his children would be hers.

It was hard to get her mind around, and yet she understood the idea. She understood that the King needed to be close to the other Checkmates, and she couldn't deny him that. And at least she had the liberty to travel the world, as Bishop; Rook and Queen had less. Queen could travel, as could King, or Rook in King's presence; but Bishop was the one that did most of the traveling.

Which was probably why she was being nudged to share his bed the rest of the time. Taiga valued his people, and he didn't understand that some people liked being alone, but there was little Nao could do about that if Rook hadn't succeeded either.

She'd made it clear that she was keeping the apartment, though she expected that eventually Taiga would see through her protests and move her and the books to a new apartment the floor below, just like Rook's workshop was there. Taiga would make sure they were never alone, no matter how much Nao wanted to be.

"I think I'll be comfortable," she said, however, trying to make sure it seemed like she was pleased. Because she didn't want the King angry with her.

She smiled up at Taiga, and he smiled back.
