Sun and Sand: Thanksgiving Dinner (2015 Ficspam)

Lily Compton is an original Kamen Rider, created after I spent too much time at Yosemite National Park and then did way too much research on the area after that. Someday I will get back to the two of them, once I learn to write fight scenes.

“That sounded like fun... not,” Marie Brown said finally.

“Natsuo will just have to find his own way, and hopefully he won't do something too stupid while he's at it.” Eimi was shrugging, and it was clear that was all she wanted to say on the subject.

“Okay, who's next? Koutarou?” She looked over at Mio's grandson. Maybe he wanted to talk now.

“Actually, I need to get back to Yosemite very soon before certain beings realize that their invasion site is sans a protector, so....” The voice came from a caucasian woman sitting nearby.

“I understand. So you are?” This place didn't suspend time like the Musing Way did, and the woman had a point.

“Lily. My bossy friend who just reminded me I have a job to do is Eileen.”

“I'm not bossy! You just need a little push... a lot of the time.” Eileen slapped Lily on the shoulder. “So, Lily, how about last Thanksgiving?”

“I think that will work,” Lily said thoughtfully. “At least for once things were peaceful....”

Lily set the table in Eileen's new home away from home. Or actually home, because Eileen had declared that she was there to keep Lily from doing something stupid. Like running off from her duties as Memora, as if Lily would do just that.

But Lily herself had long given up having a normal life; instantly donning her armor – one resembling a katydid – she fought against alien invaders. That wasn't so bad.

Living out in the middle of nowhere in a log cabin with not enough insulation was actually worse. Having an outhose was actually worse. No electricity was definitely worse.

Which was why when Eileen bought a house in the national park and invited her for Thanksgiving Dinner, she gratefully accepted. She had recently learned a little about teleportation and how to sense for imminent danger, something that would get her on the scene a lot faster than she had been getting. Getting there faster meant less damage to buildings and people. Especially people.

“Still means I am stuck here because of the stupid fireflies,” she muttered to herself.

“Lily, you complaining about the Osa again?” Eileen called. She was working on the turkey, a skill that Lily had never mastered.

“Of course I am!” When didn't she complain about the situation that the Osa had put her in? If she didn't, Eileen was authorized to drag her to said beings because something was Wrong.

“Oh, good. Check on the potatoes, would you?” Eileen asked, as if nothing had happened. “I don't want to burn them.”

“Sure.” At least Eileen had an oven.

After the dishes were all ready, the two of them sat down. Neither of them was into prayers, so they just dug in. The food was delicious, Lily thought, and she was so glad to be eating with Eileen. Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, turkey... all stuff that reminded her that she did have some normal moments among the craziness.

She supposed all superheroes were that way. They craved moments of normalcy among the moments of fighting aliens and supervillains, whatever was threatening the Earth. She was just one of the grumpier ones about it, she suspected. She hadn't asked for this, not the superhero stuff.

But at least for a little bit she could forget about it, eat Dinner, relax and try to be normal. And that, she suspected, was what Eileen was aiming for – a time for Lily to be just Lily instead of Memora, to remember the life she had without regrets.

After dinner, she snoozed off in the chair, relaxing like she hadn't done in ages.
