Fic Rec Meme
I just upgraded to WordPress 3.0, and it went mostly smoothly, but the main template for Ghostly has to be fixed. So, while I get that fixed, here’s my version of the self-reccing meme, which I snagged from Jadelennox.
“Post, in your journal, a rec list singling out the best of your own fics. Tell people why you are especially proud of those particular fics, and of course provide links to them. Yes, that’s right, this step involves self-promotion. How else are people supposed to find your fics? List as many or as few as you feel appropriate to represent your body of writing.
Also include a paragraph about the types of fics you most enjoy reading or are most interested in reading in the immediate future — favorite tropes, pairings, fandoms, whatever. If you’re particularly lazy, link to that Dear Writer post you did for whatever holiday exchange comes to mind.
Reply to other rec posts (like for example the one you are reading now) by reccing a fic of your own that might fit the original poster’s tastes, or that you’d just really like them to read, because maybe they don’t know they’d like it.”
Okay, mine are not perfect, but here’s a list of the ones I think of when I am trying to promote my fic. There’s quite a few of them (I’m a tad… prolific?), and I mention a lot of OC-heavy fics.
Baby’s First Word (Kamen Rider Kiva, OC-heavy): Ramon gets to hear his baby daughter’s first word. This is part of the “Furry Children”/”Apart from the Ocean” universe, and I like it because it’s cute – and doesn’t, to me, have the spooky overtones of “Furry Children”.
Drifts Dreaming (Earth: Final Conflict): Liam doesn’t remember what he dreams. I wrote this at the last minute for Yuletide, and I love it still. There are several references that I made in there that I recognize, but probably other people wouldn’t – Den-O and Stargate, specifically. It’s surprisingly coherent given the speed it was written, and I have a fondness for exploring Liam and who and what he is.
Fleeting Affair (Kamen Rider Kiva, OC-heavy): A human woman and a merman have one final meeting. I debated including this in here, because it’s probably the most explicit of the bunch (warning for a slight bit of sex), and has no recognizable canon characters. I had to do research for this one, though I’m not sure it shows, and I liked the two characters.
Ghetto Wear (Power Rangers Ninja Storm): CyberCam goes out on a date. I have to admit, I like OCs. I like exploring worlds sometimes more than I like working with the canon characters. What makes this one stand out is that it’s an ordinary person’s view of the Rangers and what’s going on in the world, through the eyes of someone who thinks CyberCam is Cam.
Goodbye From Where It Hurts (Kamen Rider Hibiki): Asumu talks to Todoroki. For a while, this was my only Hibiki fic. To this day, I despair of the fact that they changed over producers – and kind of shafted Asumu’s development and his relationship with Hibiki in the end. This is not a fix-it fic; it’s taking an Asumu who never went back to the sweet shop in order to avoid being in pain.
Illegible Fic (Power Rangers Dino Thunder): Trent writes fanfic. I’ve written two fics comparing Trent to Mutsuki of Kamen Rider Blade, and this is the better one (and does not require me to write in Japanese). It’s one of those “What if X wrote fanfic” stories, and I thought it natural to have Trent write fanfic about a similar tortured soul.
Loki and the Cup of Jonar (Norse Mythology): Loki seeks the wondrous Cup of Jonar. Before Yuletide, I didn’t know people wrote new fic based on mythology. My third year on Yuletide and I ended up writing one. Loki is one of my favorite characters from Norse Mythology, and even though he’s quite a nasty character, he has some interesting flaws. In this case, I used his penchant for dressing up to have him try to snag an artifact from a giantess, and not everything going well. What I like best is that I managed alliterative verse (not perfectly, but I managed it) and got a pretty darn decent story out of it.
More Courage Than (Power Rangers Ninja Storm, OC-heavy): A woman discovers a power that runs in her family. This was for Suechallenge, one of two fics I wrote for it, and the origin for Marie Brown, who later ended up in my 2007 NaNoNovel, among other things. Marie kind of totters between genuine OC and Sue, but the story, like “Ghetto Wear”, is the Rangers from an outside point of view, and I love what Marie did in the end.
Over The Borderline (Power Rangers Time Force): Katie and Trip love each other, they just don’t quite realize it yet. Or at least Trip doesn’t. This was for a challenge, and I’m somewhat amused that it ended up being a series of drabbles that when put together, became a coherent storyline. Yeah, it’s a bit disjointed because of the format, but it’s also memorable because of that.
Perfect Dance (Kamen Rider Blade): Yazawa dances through everything. Even battle. Yazawa, for those unfamiliar (the name was never given onscreen), was the Capricorn Undead. This series focuses on the Undead of Kamen Rider Blade, specifically the high-level ones, and Yazawa’s is my favorite of the bunch, because it’s so simple.
Step in the Right Direction (Starman TV): Years later, Wylie and Scott play chess. Starman was my first fandom back in the mid-late 1980s, and I came back to it for Yuletide. This fic stands out because it deals with things years and years later, when Wylie’s changed jobs, and Scott, now a man with a family, comes to deal with his past.
Telepathic Ghosts/Mistakes (New Series Tomorrow People, Tomorrow’s Future, OC-heavy): The Tomorrow People deal with a new member or two, and a young woman tries not to be seen. “Mistakes” is a remix of “Ghosts”, over a decade before I ever heard the term. In one, there’s a problem facing a new Tomorrow Person, and the second fic focuses on what’s going on “behind the scenes”. I love both of them, if only because they fit so well together.
Turns to Dust (Kamen Rider Faiz, OC-heavy): The life of an Orphenoch, from Making to Dusting. Okay, I really like Susan, the main character. But what I also like is the concept. What is life like for an Orphenoch that doesn’t disobey Smart Brain? What would their life be like? Because I’m American, I chose to make the protagonist an American teaching overseas (using research on the JET program), and I think it worked really well. Features appearances by Smart Lady (of course), Mr. J (and puppy), and Mihara.
Okay, now your turn. Rec me one of yours! I like friendship fic. I’m particularly fond of Trent from PRDT, Cam from PRNS, and the Taiga/Wataru pairing from Kamen Rider Kiva, but a good gen friendship fic will always make me happy.
Alternatively, did I miss any of your favorites of mine?
