Fic: For The Earth's Sake
This is response to a poll request for a sequel/prequel to "Traitorous Jewelry", which itself is in the "Discovering the Sun" universe. This takes place before the events of "Discovering the Sun".

Summary: Tadokoro has a young man to shape into what he must become.
For the Earth's Sake

Tadokoro had only vaguely known who the Chosen Ones were. Oh he knew what they were in abstract, but he had never met any of them.
The young man, barely adult by Human standards, much less his own kind's, stood behind his superior, in that kind of half-macho, half-nervous look that made one unsure as to how to treat him. All Tadokoro knew was that this was the first of two Chosen Ones, two young humans born to be Chosen Ones, that he was supposed to be supervising and shaping into Chosen Ones.
Kagami Arata was the young one's name; a name he had known, that all of them had known, ever since this child had been born some twenty years ago, and even before that. He looked at the boy, trying to see what had gone on below the boy's skin, the invisible modifications that made this one a tiny bit of his own kind before any modification from the Zecter he was going to partner with.
The God of Battle. This boy was going to be their God of Battle?
At least someday. He was to be indoctrinated into ZECT, made to believe he wanted to be there. When the time came, it would be easier for him to accept the Zecter that he was destined to wield. And the responsibility to make him into their eager God of Battle was Tadokoro.
From what Tadokoro had heard, this was going to be the easier one to handle.
His kind had heard rumors, confirmed that Kusakabe was working against them. Such a human couldn't be trusted not to turn against Tadokoro's kind, so he and his wife had been replaced. Unfortunately, the young Kusakabe had been in the vicinity, seen the execution and exchange. Was understandably more than a little wary of their kind, enough that he was left alone. Left alone in hopes that he'd forget the killing, be more malleable when his Zecter claimed him.
The rumors that Tadokoro had heard hadn't given him any great hope that Kusakabe could be tamed. Kagami, more likely, would be willing to serve, though he knew his superiors had been less than pleased on how the boy's father had dealt with the disappearance of his younger son and driven the older away. A bit of separation was good, but not if it drove the younger from ZECT.
He greeted the young man, thanked his superior, watched his superior go on his way. Kagami Arata was his pupil now, and he had to get this right. For his sake. For all their sakes.
For the Earth's sake.
