estirose: A pixel portrait of a woman (never sure)
This may be a scam (or it might be some enterprising way to go for the former owners of my phone #, I don't know).

I had a gentleman call up this evening. He had a thick Indian/Pakistani accent and said that I was going to be sent something from the "U.S. Department of Grants". (This would be in reference, I presume, to getting a grant, not paying a grant. All my college grants were state-based, so I wouldn't think the call would have anything to do with them.)

Funny thing is, I can't seem to find a U.S. Department of Grants anywhere, though I can find grants.gov, which is a government directory for grants. (I can find something that might have been as part of the Department of Education, but it's dead now.) Since it sounded suspicious, I didn't hang around, I hung up.

Has anyone run across this? Am I just totally missing this strange U.S. federal department?

ETA: These people might be the ones mentioned in This news article that was linked off the grants.gov website. Several other articles mention this type of scam, my old friends at Snopes.com included.

So, it does look like a scam.
