Basically, it's a for-profit company that runs a fanfiction site. There's a bit going on that makes people uncomfortable (notably their TOS, and their reaction to criticism).
If you're interested in finding out more, I recommend two jumping off points:
Henry Jenkins' take on the whole thing, which serves as an introduction, and
life_wo_fanlib (some bits NSFW), which collects more links than you ever wanted to see about the topic.
I checked my active and inactive fandoms, and most of them have 0 stories, unless it's a popular fandom. For example, there were 50 fanfics in the Highlander category, 9 for Forever Knight, and 13 for Sliders, but 0 for Earth: Final Conflict, Super Sentai, and Tomorrow People, and only 3 for Power Rangers. (There's no category for Kamen Rider, which is probably because they seem to have copied the category list from fanfiction.net....) The quality is pretty much like fanfiction.net - that is, you get good stories tangled up with bad mary sues and people who have no sense of grammar. I'm staying away personally, mostly because their site drives me nuts (who in the heck sets their site up to have so many scripts that you can't read the stories without having scripting on, really?) and I'm wary of how they are going to handle things if some PTB gets pissed off at (as one example put it) NC-17 BDSM McShep - as most people who remember fanfiction.net going down the tubes know. Plus, drawing attention to fanfiction? Not good.
I had something else to say, but I forgot. Bah.
