This is what happens when my muses pick up inspiration from prompts and need to be kicked out of my head. Basically, a tiny bit of an AU where a certain somebody was unconscious the whole time and doesn't speak modern English. Set during "Break Out", but diverges from the end.
He doesn't understand the words the man is saying. They should make sense, but they are too slurred, too fast, too different for him to understand. There is anguish in those eyes, as if Ivan's emergence from the monster who had captured him was not expected.
But Ivan can't do anything about that right now. He knows, instinctively, what he has to do. He calls the strange armor and fights the monster that has captured him, brushing aside the obvious concerns of the others with a wave of his hand. They do not seem to be knights, even if they do have the armor and are fighters. He does.
Soon, the battle is done. The man that comes with them is obviously of the Zandar nobility, royalty to be exact, even if he doesn't recognize the face. There is something wrong, he could see it from when he had fought inside the large metal bird. Things have changed. Things are vastly different. Still, he has a duty to this lord, at least to offer the gem and his services.
But after consulting with the other warriors, the prince gives him back the gem. He is confused, blinking at the idea that he is not in the lord's service.
The other warriors attempt to bring him with them. He can tell they're not trying to restrain him, as if bringing him to trial. Instead, they seem happy to have him with them. Maybe he had it wrong, and maybe Ivan is being released to work with them.
He looks back at his prince, trying to get him to say something, even if he can't understand. Even if the man's words are as slurred and as fast as the others'. But the prince says nothing, and seems to even encourage him to go with them.
So Ivan does, because this is what his prince wants, and this is what he will do.

I think it's possible that he could have some issues even if he was aware the whole time, since it's not like Fury hung out with ordinary English speakers the whole time, although he'd be more used to it. Maybe he'd be able to understand but not speak, since he didn't get any practice? Sorry, getting off topic. I like that he's confused by what Phillip is doing-- royalty probably works differently than it did, even taking the fictional country thing into account.

Date: 2015-09-18 12:52 am (UTC)I'm pretty sure that archaeology is a fairly new discipline, relatively speaking.
As for fighting ability, I can handwave, kind of, the whole bit of he knows what he's doing by the information feeding itself into him for the purposes of being able to fight. Though not anything else.
My knowledge of what changed between Middle English and current English is not great, but I did do some quick looking up on the subject. Which came out as "Ivan can't understand them because they have too many silent vowels and pronounce things just a bit too differently for him". Him understanding but not being able to speak current English would be very interesting, I think.
I want to do a ton of research on the whole thing, but I have no time right now, between school and other RL stuff. :( (And my brain wants Dino Charge cuddlepile with the whole current team, which is probably better written by other authors.)

Yeah, Power Rangers canon tends to handwave all of that for a reason, and since the energems give people visions of dinosaurs, why not some more practical knowledge too? And Ivan is a trained fighter, so he would definitely know how to handle himself.
