ETA: Video under cut after rambling.
The silly thing about the cut text? You get information via notes that people leave behind (Mafuyu, the people he was looking for, etc). Well, and tape recordings too, because this is set in 1986 and therefore there are no cellphones or digital cameras.
Funnily enough, I didn't buy it because it was set in 1986; I bought it because I wanted to play the darn game.
Now, gameplay-wise, for this game I have the advantage of seeing a lot of Let's Plays and reading a few walkthroughs. That being said, I'm also trying to navigate around on a screen where I can't currently turn up the brightness. At least Miku's portion of the game is so far in color. It's got a very effective atmosphere; while I'm not getting nightmares (thankfully), it's made me far more aware of peripheral sounds, such as wind blowing in the trees, which in turn is making me a bit edgy during the game. (And thanks to the Let's Plays/guides, I'm constantly on alert because I'm aware that hostile random ghosts could pop up at any time. You do not walk away from this game without putting it on pause unless you want to come back to a Game Over screen!)
So far in the game, prior to tonight, I've done the following things:
* Played through Mafuyu's chapter and did a good job with my first ghost battle. Of course, he encounters ghost-with-many-hands and ends up being grabbed by a bunch of hands reaching out of the wall. (Miku, after seeing this in a vision: "Did something happen to my brother?" Cue hysterical laughter.)
* Got all of the stationary/hidden ghosts and some of the vanishing ones. Got Editor-guy as a vanishing ghost once out of his three to six appearances (got the rope hallway, missed him at the foot of the stairs, entering the lamp hallway, once in the library going towards the closet, once in the closet, and once in the kimono room walking somewhere), Mafuyu once (since when is he a ghost?), and an unknown ghost that I think is Mr. Takamine, novelist-guy, based on one of the Let's Plays.
* Learned how to take photos of things to get clues, aided by someone very short.
* Managed to battle the Editor-guy twice, though it took a few times on the second battle to learn how to not get killed. First battle I got him in a one-hit kill with a Zero Shot.
* Got to do my first camera upgrades. Increased my range and speed (which increases my points/chance of Zero Shots).
Tonight:
* Finally read all the notes that I hadn't read yet that were in my files, and some that I had. ("There's another rope... and another rope!" Poor guy.)
* Got all three vanishing ghost appearances of Editor-guy (lamp hall closet, opening the door to the library, and right behind me in the kimono room). I didn't get all of them at first, but I got plenty of practice tonight due to:
* Editor-guy battle 3. I got killed about three times before surviving the fourth. Oddly enough, by doing what every guide says generally not to do with ghosts - stand there and not move - I managed to kill him. I'm still not sure how. Got to upgrade the camera speed again.
* Got to unlock my first locked door with the key I found just before battle 3. Then got lost in the new room because it has about four doors and I can't see things well. I remembered that one of the doors lead to a room with a save point, which I very gratefully used.
* Jumped when I ran across a cutscene that I didn't remember seeing before, someone clattering up the stairs.
I'm going to practice more fighting ghosts (if I don't end up immersed in my other game, Final Fantasy IV) tomorrow.
Here's me going down to battle the Editor again, getting the three vanishing ghosts in the process, and then going down the hall to the unexpected cutscene. What I'm aiming for is to get the ghost while I'm at maximum charge and he's about to attack (all the sigils at the bottom are lighted up and the circle's red), which does a lot of damage.
