The Tomorrow People CW, ep 1
Oct. 9th, 2013 09:39 pmI got to see it a little bit ahead of my timezone. I tried to avoid anything that wasn't spoiled in the promo material, but if you haven't seen it, there might be minor spoilers.
Well, it's not awful.
It's a bit too pretty and violent for my tastes, but I'm not ready to give it up quite yet. It's got promise, and somehow, I'm a sucker for "finding the father or mother" storylines. I kind of am warming to John and Stephen, and my favorite character has to be Astrid. I do have to admit that they should have chosen different character names - every time someone mentioned Stephen and John, I looked for the 1970s characters, not the new ones.
Things I did like: There are more than a few Tomorrow People, even if they are extras. It gives the mythology a little bit more of a twist. As mentioned, I liked Astrid (even more than Cara, who I am so glad was not named Carol). I think I'll grow to like Russell. The special effects are quite good, and I like the headquarters.
Things I wasn't as fond of: The sheer amount of fighting. After two series where there was little to no fighting, seeing two people sparring and that being all right and even encouraged by John was more than a little jarring to me. And while I appreciated the fact that they included the Prime Barrier, I don't like how it was implemented (it showed how ruthless the guy set up as the main villain was, but I think it also portrayed it as a bad thing, where I generally like the Prime Barrier).
I can write this for Yuletide, I believe, but I don't think it's going to hit my heart like the other two televised series did.

Date: 2013-10-15 05:33 pm (UTC)The fighting was unexpected, but that's in perspective to what we know and remember, I think. I think it actually makes sense that they can defend themselves for those times when their powers fail.
I like John. Not so sure I like the 'Savior of All of Us' thing they're launching with Stephen, but we'll see. Not a fan of Cara. Like Jedikiah, but that could just be my love of Mark Pellegrino coming out.
I'm going to give it a few more watches before deciding overall. Although I'm already disappointed that there is the setup for a love triangle (but it's the CW so I should have known that was coming), and I'm truly hoping that Julie Plec doesn't ruin this one the way she did TVD with her very clear fangirling over Damon/Elena.
