I posted this to AO3 as chapter 16 of Something to Build. Here so that it's on DW.
Kouta was apt to slam his fist into walls when he thought nobody was looking. Michi paid careful attention; no matter how happy she was that Kouta had lost his Driver, he wasn't taking the loss well. As things went, she thought that Yggdrasill had treated him and Kumon Kaito well the two weeks they'd been in there, though she thought the scientist's attempt to give both of them new drivers was a little odd, given that Kouta had been visited by her brother shortly into his time there and told that he and Kaito weren't getting them back. She had to get into Yggdrasill and find out what was going on.
With Kouta and Kaito out of the picture, there were only four Armored Riders left; herself, Jonouchi of Team Invitto, Mr. Oren from the bakery, and her brother. Gaim hadn't needed its Ryugen, because Jonouchi was too busy learning how to bake and Oren was too busy trumpeting his win over the Beat Riders. And she hadn't used her Driver ever since finding out from Kouta that they were test subjects.
Now that everything was more or less back to normal, she had to make Kouta happy again, help him cope. She had the sense that her brother had tried to do just that; it was ironic, how he seemed to care more for her teammate than he did for her.
For the moment, though, she was happy that she was in her hoodie instead of her school uniform. She could pretend she wasn't one of the Kureshimas of Zawame city.
A van pulled up on the street, and Kurokage Troopers spilled out. The Troopers meant that there was a Crack nearby, no doubt, and that was the last thing she wanted to deal with. She started hurrying, hoping to get far away from where they were going.
Instead, they were heading towards her, and as she changed direction she realized that they weren't there for a Crack; they were there for *her*. It was her turn to be captured, just like Kouta and Kaito had before.
She had a few advantages at least, she thought as she started to run. She wasn't wearing armor, she was smaller, and she was faster. Even if she intended to be captured, she wouldn't do it without a fight.
Michi wasn't sure that she wanted to be captured, so she kept running, slipping into alleys and around obstacles too big for her would-be captors to avoid.
Finally, she lost them, shaking as she finally stopped. She had to think. She had to plan. She had to know more. She needed time.
She headed to Gaim. Even if her course was utterly predictable, she'd let Kouta protect her and maybe she'd figure out how to handle this.

Date: 2014-09-09 09:16 pm (UTC)So this is a universe where Takatora never discovered Michi was Ryugen? And of course nobody told him he was ordering the capture of his own sister.
Interesting that Takatora met with Kouta and Kaito. Did he introduce himself? Canon makes me think that Kouta knew Micchy's family name before. I hope Kaito doesn't know Michi's family name because I think Kaito is suspicious enough to suspect that she's in on it. If Kaito was told that he wouldn't get his Driver back, I wonder if he'd take Ryouma up on his offer of new belts? Or at least try to steal one.

Date: 2014-09-10 01:46 am (UTC)In musing further on this storyline, I figured that it would be near-impossible to keep Takatora from finding out his baby sister was put in confinement to wean her off her belt. As much as my Ryouma-muse would have loved to have Takatora distracted by looking for/worrying about baby sister.

Date: 2014-09-10 02:24 am (UTC)And Kouta thinking Takatora isn't related to Michi makes sense. He knows she's from a wealthy background, but he still only really knows her in a Team Gaim context. It's pretty different. And he trusts her.
Poor Takatora. If he asked anyone in Yggdrasil to help him look for her, they'd be very confused. And since he visited the other test subjects, there's no reason he'd skip the third (unless there was some sort of emergency or something, I guess).
no subject
Date: 2014-09-10 02:46 am (UTC)Ryouma might try to keep Takatora from visiting the third test subject? By saying he will, if nothing else. On the other hand, Takatora can be pretty stubborn. But he's going to freak out anyway if Michi goes missing.
(If Takatora did come, Michi would try not to face Takatora or talk much so that he doesn't realize that she's his sister, because she doesn't want him finding out she's a Beat Rider.)

Date: 2014-09-10 03:30 am (UTC)Absolutely. Michi may come home late and not say much about it, but she always comes home. I can see Takatora taking Ryouma's offer to talk to #3 instead as a gesture that he should save his energy for worrying about Michi and saying something like "no, it's my responsibility and I'll do it."
(Michi could possibly pull off something by rearranging her hair and changing posture or something, but I don't know. Sorry, language ability has gone downhill tonight.)

Date: 2014-09-10 03:44 am (UTC)I see Takatora spending a lot of time talking to police/trying to trace down where Michi went (via her phone/tablet). Unfortunately for Takatora, Ryouma had the foresight to either have the Troopers jam the signal or simply turn the devices off. Normally he wouldn't bother, but this is Takatora's sister. Her last signal is wherever the Troopers captured her.
I could see her captured semi-willingly. (She'd still put up a fight.) And if Ryouma visits, she'll be somewhat relieved - and he'll immediately try to start using her. And she'll spend the next two weeks while she's cooped up trying to plan something that will make her seem like she was kidnapped for something else/some other reason instead of spending two weeks getting weaned off her Driver. If Takatora visits, she'll have to do her best to not get recognized by him - she'll be prepared because Kouta told her what happened.

Date: 2014-09-10 03:45 pm (UTC)Takatora would be distracted and he probably wouldn't think of looking closely at Michi-as-Gaim-member, I think. Takatora's a smart guy, but he doesn't always see what he doesn't expect.
(To quote Shakespeare, "A brother noble [] whose nature is so far from doing harms that he suspects none." Not that Takatora doesn't do harms, but he is such a straight shooter.)

Date: 2014-09-10 07:19 pm (UTC)---
Michi sat on the bed in her holding cell. As Kouta had mentioned, it was fairly pleasant - there was water and a bathroom. She had changed from school uniform to her hoodie in the tiny bathroom, hastily stuffing it into the bag. The braids in her hair were still there, she checked. She'd had Chucky help put them in that day, having seen the Troopers following her earlier. She'd felt that having the troopers catch her at home would be better than them catching her at Gaim, since the first thing her brother would ask someone to do was to trace her cellphone and/or tablet location.
The Troopers had caught her at the gate of her home, and she'd gotten quite a few hits on them before theyd surrounded and handcuffed her.
Now all she had to do was survive Takatora. But the Gaim outfit and the hoodie should keep him from recognizing her if she was careful. And then she'd have two weeks to formulate what happened to her. Sure, there would be tests, and watched meals, but she could cope with those. She would be a model prisoner while she was there.
All and all, it was someting she could survive, because it was something that she could plan for and something she could get through.

Date: 2014-09-10 08:30 pm (UTC)Was something said about Yggdrasil having full control of Zawame including any policing, or am I misremembering things? I'm sure they'd have to even if it wasn't explicitly said, at least. I hope for everyone's sake that Takatora doesn't look through some of those records himself. It's probably not his branch, but he might be able to get access to those records due to the nature of his branch. Or something. Corporate structure is not something I'm particularly knowledgeable about.
I'd also be really intrigued to know about Gaim's reaction. Kouta knows where she is, whereas when he was there nobody knew where he was.

Date: 2014-09-11 12:48 am (UTC)Takatora probably could get records (I don't know if he'd have access to police records/cam feeds, and I can't remember either), but for Michi's sake I hope he just lets the police handle it. The last thing Michi needs is for him to see Yggdrasill troopers grabbing his sister.
Kouta already blabbed to Team Gaim that he was kidnapped by Yggdrasill, so they might know what happened to her if she disappears and maybe not worry as much (or they might even worry more). She had to tell Kouta what was going on and swore him to secrecy on the fact that Yggdrasill was hunting her. He of course wanted to protect her and she turned him down and reminded him that she could fight her own battles, thanks.

Date: 2014-09-11 02:35 am (UTC)I don't know about Takatora. On one hand he can be a little hands-off, but on the other hand she's his little sister and he's responsible for her in a very personal way. It's a bad time for her to be missing. There are lots of things that could've happened to her besides kidnapping. I hope someone (i.e. Ryouma) planned how to handle Takatora in this. It seems tricky.
The braids sound terribly cute.

Date: 2014-09-11 03:10 am (UTC)Poor Takatora. Going to find out that his underlings kidnapped his sister on his orders. Ryouma's plan is to either mess up Michi's memory or convince her that it's in her best interests to lie to her brother about being kidnapped by Yggdrasill.
--
Takatora steeled himself as he walked down the hallway to the confinement rooms. Right now, only one of the test subjects should be there - the third one, if he remembered right. Ryouma had told him that the fourth and fifth should be caught together, unless he wanted a baker rampaging through Yggdrasill looking for his apprentice. Takatora didn't need that headache.
No, the last thing he needed was something happening on top of Michi's disappearance. She hadn't come home last night, and he'd filed a missing person's report that morning. He had confidence that due to the nature of the case that Michi's disappearance would take top priority.
The first and second Riders had been demanding teenagers - and teenagers they were still, despite being officially adults. Takatora had done his best to reassure them that everything would be fine and made sure that they were treated well. When he'd heard that one of them had requested reading material, he'd made sure that they had it.
The third was the girl of the group, the only female Armored Rider. He remembered fighting her, the cautious fighter who had actually done a decent job at resisting him. It made sense that the girl would have to be tactical, considering her opposition.
As he drew up to the door, he considered the girl in the confinement room, dressed in leggings and a blue hoodie. Her hair reminded him a little of Michi's, if Michi had somehow started braiding her hair. He couldn't see her face clearly, because she was staring at the wall away from him. The good news was that, per Ryouma, the girl had obeyed all instructions and ate when she was ordered to, without a trace of rebellion. Takatora just worried that she might be going catatonic or something similar, and made a note to ask Ryouma about it.
He glanced over at the dresser and was pleased to see some books there. At least she wouldn't be bored, assuming she didn't mind academic textbooks.
Nodding at the guard on duty, he placed his keycard on the reader. He shut the door behind him. "I know you're not happy about being here, but it's for your own good. That Driver was an experimental device, and we want to make sure you're okay and nothing went wrong with you." It was a speech he might have given to a younger Michi, and he had to wonder if his worry over his baby sister was influencing his words. Or maybe it was the thought that this might be some other brother's missing baby sister, just like his sister was missing. "Once we're done, we'll release you."
She would be driverless, but she'd be okay. At least if there was nothing else wrong with her. She nodded once, as if to ackowledge his words.
He turned to leave, and the guard readily let him out. As he left, Takatora was struck by the fact that at a certain angle, her face looked like Michi's.
But that was impossible. He couldn't dwell on it, so he went down the hall, swearing silently that he'd both find Michi and make sure this girl made it home driverless, but safe.

Date: 2014-09-11 04:09 am (UTC)Ryouma probably doesn't have to do much to convince Michi not to tell Takatora the truth. Wouldn't stop her from threatening it if backed into a corner, but I think she'd much rather keep Takatora out of her life as much as possible. I'm not sure what kind of lie would appease Takatora and keep him at arm's length, though. It must feel weird to return back to just dancing and stuff.
no subject
Date: 2014-09-11 01:29 pm (UTC)Michi at least is prepared when she meets Ryouma and she turns down his offer of a new Driver pretty easily. But she does see that he wants Takatora to find out where she's been as much as she does (she's more surprised by the fact he's working against Takatora than she is by the fact he wants her to cover up the fact that she was taken by Yggdrasill).
And at least she has two weeks - maybe more - to figure out a good lie. (In the meantime, Kouta is trying to figure out how to rescue her and Takatora's trying to pull the CCTV recordings because he knows where she was when she disappeared.)
no subject
Date: 2014-09-11 03:55 pm (UTC)Yeah, there's probably at least some sort of surveillance around their house. They have money and Takatora is kind of Important.
I hope Takatora doesn't pull those records himself. Or somehow catch a member of Gaim snooping around Michi's known spots for clues about how she was taken (e.g. signs of a struggle). I wonder if anyone knows where she lives? Takatora would probably not be in the mood to talk very much to them anyway.
Ryouma is probably quite pleased that he gets two weeks to examine Michi in relative peace. Unfortunately, there's also Takatora and he's unfortunately the one who Takatora trusts most in his little rebel group. And he can't see him examine Michi.
(I wonder if Sagara would interfere in this AU. Since it seems that the reason Sagara interfered in canon was largely Mai's interference, I think it'd be hard to figure out without a sense of the future.)
no subject
Date: 2014-09-11 04:35 pm (UTC)Ryouma is quite happy at the moment, for obvious reasons.
Takatora is running into some red tape on the CCTV scans, but his home had some security. He unfortuntely can't see who kidnapped his sister, but he can see that she's trying to fight someone off and doing decently before she vanishes off screen. So he's trying to get the CCTV so he can get the full picture. At which point he'll be charging down to holding to see his sister. Who doesn't want to be rescued.

Date: 2014-09-11 09:12 pm (UTC)So, of course Takatora's going to get his hands on the CCTV footage and find out that his little sister is in Yggdrasill custody, getting weaned off of a driver. I wish Micchy's canon feelings about Takatora were a bit more explored too. It would make my life much easier.
At least Ryouma can run interference and be useful? Though Takatora knows where the confinement cells are. Michi might be able to persuade him to let her finish being weaned off of the Driver. (And find stuff out from Ryouma.)
no subject
Date: 2014-09-11 10:40 pm (UTC)That sounds like something Kaito would do. And something Michi would definitely not.
Takatora definitely knows where the cells are, considering he's visited them. I'd imagine that realizing he ordered Michi's capture would horrify him and that Sid and/or Ryouma would need to change their excuse a little.

Date: 2014-09-12 12:16 am (UTC)I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 12:57 am (UTC)--
Michi engaged in small talk with the technician who was watching over her to make sure she finished dinner. She really didn't mind, because it was easy to milk the woman for information, or at least the information the woman had. She had protested, of course, when she was told that she wouldn't be left alone to eat, but in truth it didn't bother her.
The guard watching outside didn't bother her either. She was a bit sore that night - one of Sengoku Ryouma's techs had taken a blood sample earlier that afternoon - but she wasn't going to complain. She was going to be the politest, most cooperative prisoner ever. And by the time she left, she'd know how to hide the truth about her captivity from her brother.
And by being polite, people seemed more free to tell her things they shouldn't. She would have a lot of information on Yggdrasill by the time she was weaned off her Driver.
There was a commotion outside, and the technician looked up. The guard made a startled noise. "Sir?"
The "sir", of course, was her brother. Michi internally cursed as she turned away quickly. It was eight in the evening- why of all times was her brother coming to visit a prisoner?
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 02:46 am (UTC)It sounds like Michi is using her obedience to full effect. It's a good plan. I'd assume the technician who comes in with meals is lower on the totem pole than Ryouma's techs and is much less familiar with the driver technology. The soreness is interesting. Is he taking a larger quantity of blood than usual for lab stuff, or is Michi just particularly sensitive? The tech could also just be a little clumsy, but that would probably be less likely.
Michi doesn't mind not being alone as long as the person she's with isn't her brother, I bet. Poor Takatora. He probably feels really tricked by the whole situation. And it shows Michi's feelings about Gaim more than she'd ever admit to him.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 03:03 am (UTC)Michi actually likes the Yggdrasill people she's come in contact with, for the most part. Of course, they all kind of like the quiet, obedient girl that's in the containment cell.
And now she's going to be quite angry that all of that's gotten disrupted. At least (or so she thinks) if she hides her face then maybe her brother will go away.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 03:34 am (UTC)Yes, they all want to treat her as well as possible. And probably better when the people interacting with her realize she's that Kureshima, which I don't think she'll like.
Poor Michi. Hiding your face won't work when your identity is already on file.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 03:47 am (UTC)She's treated well, even by Ryouma's folks. And she likes them for the same reasons she likes being with Gaim: she's not a Kureshima there. At least not the important kind.
And it doesn't work when your brother realizes the reason you're missing is because he ordered your capture and imprisonment. And of course, if he wants to leave with Michi, neither the tech nor the guard is going to protest.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 04:06 am (UTC)Not at all. You absolutely do not argue with the Big Boss if you want to stay employed. Especially when he's upset.
Michi might protest, but she also might feel like she can't. Takatora might try to work something out where he keeps an eye on her at home or get someone to come and stay with her. Or she could just get out and try to figure out what to tell Gaim. It might be really bad if they broke in to find her missing.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 04:23 am (UTC)--
Her older brother was talking to the tech and the guard, mentioning how he was familiar with the process of Driver withdrawal and how he'd be able to take care of her. The last thing she wanted to do was go home and be stuck with Takatora for a week and a half, the amount of time she'd calculated she had left at Yggdrasill.
Especially as he was mentioning working from home until she was recovered. Ugh.
She shifted, and her side brushed against her bruised arm. It gave her an idea. Closing her eyes, she tried to look as pathetic and unwell as possible. If she could plead illness, or at least lightheadedness, Takatora might be persuaded to leave her there for medical treatment. After all, he could hardly explain to anybody outside Yggdrasill what was wrong with her, right?
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 03:10 pm (UTC)Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.

"Michi?" her brother sounded frantic for some reason, probably for show. She felt someone sit down beside her, and then there was a warm hand on her shoulder. "What's wrong?"
"I don't feel well," she said. What did it look like, after all?
There was a slightly cooler hand on her wrist. "Pulse is okay," the tech said, while she could hear the guard call for medical services. "How long have you been feeling unwell, Ms. Kureshima ?" There was a politeness in her tone that hadn't been there before. All the connections that Michi had made, gone in an instant.
"I don't know," Michi said. "A few minutes ago, I think? I feel lightheaded."
"Put your head between your knees, you'll feel better," her brother said, and she did just that. She wasn't going to shatter her facade.
"Doctor'll be showing up shortly," the guard said, somewhere off to the left.
"Breathe, Ms. Kureshima," the tech told her.
There was the clatter of something being pushed. "Ms. Kureshima? How are you feeling?"
This must be the doctor. She opened her eyes. "Lightheaded and dizzy and I wanna throw up." She could see nothing but her legs and the floor.
A moment later, the trash can was pushed between her knees.
"Okay. I'm reviewing your medical chart right now. We're going to take you to a hospital bed - you might be dehydrated."
"I've been drinking water." That could easily be checked.
"That might not matter here. When did you start feeling unwell?"
"A few minutes ago, during dinner. I didn't want to say anything, because I didn't want people to worry." She hoped they'd associate that with the problems with Kumon Kaito, not with her faking it.
"Has she ever had any problems like this?" the doctor asked, and Michi was confused for a moment before she realized the man was talking to her brother.
"No, but she normally doesn't like to tell me when she gets sick."
"Oh. Okay, Ms. Kureshima, how are you feeling now?"
Michi groaned.
"We'll figure out what's going on." The doctor sounded confident. "Overseer, do you want me to call Dr. Sengoku?"
"Yes. There are some things I want to talk to him about once the emergency's over." She'd never heard her brother sound so angry.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 08:41 pm (UTC)Man, Michi really is not that great at faking illness. If Takatora was a more skeptical person and the employees weren't invested in making absolutely sure that she was okay, I really doubt that would fly at all. Michi's smart, but faking is a completely different skill. Being able to lie to people who trust you 100% does not make you a good liar.
This feels like the crux of Michi's resentment towards her brother. Micchy's, too.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 08:57 pm (UTC)Ryouma will instantly pick up on this and whisk her off to a hospital room and hook her up with sensors and a nice little drip just for appearances. And tell Takatora that it may be a side effect of her being reliant on Lock Seeds. She should stay at Yggdrasil, of course, just in case complications arise. And when he gets a moment alone with her, get her trust by pointing out how badly she was faking.
(And then he gets to explain to Takatora why nobody told him that he'd ordered the capture of his own sister.)
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-12 09:17 pm (UTC)I don't envy Ryouma that job, but he's certainly clever enough to think of something. He could say that he didn't pay attention to her name, but that sounds flimsy and wouldn't get Sid off the hook at all. Not that Ryouma is above letting other people take the fall for him, just that I think he'd avoid using that up if he could.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-13 12:15 am (UTC)As for Michi, she has used Lock Seeds for nutrition semi a accidentally (she put a Himawari on her driver as an experiment and noticed she felt better, but had no spares to test it further until she snagged a Lock Seed that was supposed to go to Sid after the game). Ryouma will use this to explain why Michi needs to be under observation a tiny bit longer, and by the way, it's past time for her to join Yggdrasil and put her skills to good use under Ryouma.
(Of course, if Michi goes home, Ryouma will keep up the pretense of her illness and will tell Takatora that she's released as long as Takatora makes sure she eats and takes her back if she has any symptoms.)
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-13 01:09 am (UTC)No matter what happened, I doubt Ryouma would let Takatora know Michi was faking.
Re: I seem to be writing commentfic.
Date: 2014-09-13 01:56 am (UTC)Speaking of which, she would not have to be weaned off her belt if she joined. Which is useful, because he has both Kureshimas under his influence, and getting another Driver user on his side can only help.
--
Takatora took a deep breath. As much as he was furious at Ryouma, what his friend said made sense to him. He did want Michi to come into her own as a Kureshima, he just didn't expect for her to do it by latching onto a Driver under his nose. She'd done actually fairly well.
He'd have to review her file and find out more about how she ended up being part of a Beat Rider team as Ryouma had indicated that she was. He'd need to understand that part of her life before he extended the offer to join Yggdrasil. It wasn't like she was going anywhere - she was too tired and weak, and she was hooked up to an I.V. besides.
In the meantime, Ryouma would figure out what had happened to her so that it could be remedied. Not that she needed to be weaned off her Driver if she joined Yggdrasil. That was for the people they needed to protect, and as much as he hated to admit it, Michi did not need protecting.
It would take a few days for everything to be resolved, but Ryouma was right - even if this had scared him to death, it was ultimately a good thing for the world. Now Michi could finally embrace her destiny, and in the end it was good.
