I have some stuff I want to post up to DW (and I need to post a new fic part for a Drive fic I've got on AO3, but that'll have to wait. In the meantime, here are two things for your reading pleasure:

"Delicate Appendages" was my 2009 NaNoWriMo fic, and it's now on AO3 under "Original Work". It's about halfway posted, but the story itself is complete. I did submit it a few years ago to Amazon's aspiring author contest, but I'm glad it didn't get far past the first stage, because it was inspired by a line in the novelization of the first episode of "War of the Worlds" (TV). It makes reference to the War of the Worlds invasion, which turned out much different (the warlike aliens died out really fast, and not due to the reason in the series/movies/radio play).

Here are the warnings I put on the fic: "Description of a near-rape in the first part; discussion of sex and sexual organs, human and not. Some of the characters speak horrendously bad English, and Erin is nowhere as clued about some parts of human sexuality and gender identity as she thinks." It's locked on the archive, though rated Teen/Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings.

The second fic, "It Is Impossible" is a Kamen Rider Ghost fic posted on [community profile] fan_flashworks (and by comm rules, exclusive there for the next few days). Basically, a look at what would have happened if Akari had a hold of the Eyecon when the bad guys came calling, and ended up in Takeru's position. I love female-character-becomes-Rider fics because the writers are so bad at having main female Riders in their series.

I haven't read Delicate Appendages in quite some time! :D

Akari as Ghost would be really interesting. Takeru would be a great sidekick, especially if retained the ability to see ghosts.

I think she'd be more inclined to believe in monsters if she could see them. It would be empirical proof of something.

Maybe Takeru has to pull the memento of his dad card or something. Or keep it from her whenever she's not fighting, although that might be risky. Or maybe trying to take it apart would hurt her too much to continue. Or maybe since the Eyecons seem to be more containers than the souls themselves, maybe it would just disturb her ability to interact with the physical world.

Shinnosuke is always a good choice for explaining the responsibilities of being a Rider.

I admit that I haven't quite finished Drive (I tend to drop things when I get really stressed, which never helps), but that sounds very plausible to me!

Yeah, since it is unlikely that she can take apart an Eyecon without tools, going insubstantial would make it difficult. And if Takeru or Onari were there at the time, they would flip.

Yeah, that would be interesting! I'm also interested what her fighting style would be like.

Hmm. The eyecon is from Takeru's dad, so she'd probably need to tell him something. I could see her giving it up to him, possibly, which might not end well.

I assume she doesn't have the training Takeru has, for a few reasons.

I think Akari would also need Takeru to help with the seal-drawing and such. I think she could still look for a scientific explanation while fighting them-- it's not that science specifically says ghosts don't exist, but more that it's not something we can scientifically investigate. As Ghost, Akari might be able to do that. I don't know what her end goal for that kind of investigation would be, though.

Poor Akari. She really doesn't know how to proceed, since this is all a huge shock to her. I think it's the same in canon, too, but there she has the option to continue on with her life as normal.

Takeru and Onari would definitely be the most optimistic ones about this. As in canon, I'm sure Onari would be tripping over himself to help, too. I hope he'd figure out quickly that rubbing it in that the supernatural exists would be cruel when she's Ghost.

Yeah, Onari's too excitable of a guy not to make a rash mistake like that at least once. And absolutely the training thing-- I can see him also trying to get her to train with him. And failing, since they don't really seem to have a relationship that would accommodate it. Poor Takeru, trying to do what he can without having the resources to do so.

(I have realized that the well-meaning controlling streak may be why I instantly liked Onari, whoops.)

(Yes, I have a huge thing for characters in positions of authority who are clueless too. Misguided charisma is amazing.)

Poor, poor Akari. I can completely understand not believing that she'll be able to manage it-- after all, there are probably tons of spirits and ghosts wandering around, and she's got to find specific ones. And she's probably not as willing to listen to the old guy hermit as Takeru is about how to find them. Giving up her apartment now makes a tragic amount of sense. The bit about working on a paper, though, is pretty hopeful-- even though she believes she'll be gone, she wants to leave behind something important.

I hope Takeru points out that, even as a ghost, she needs to watch her mental health and not keep avoiding people. Onari can be annoying, but at least the sign might help her stay involved in the outside world.

Yeah. With so little canon so far, it's difficult to figure out where a canon AU would go. I'm glad that finding more eyecons would help. There are a few other scientific-minded great people to find I think, which I'm sure she'll enjoy.
