This was an early draft of the fic that became "Turns to Dust".

I was told, once, that this was the greatest job in the world. And, even at this moment, I don't regret it.

I stumbed on it accidentally; me and some friends had taken off from Keio Plaza here in Tokyo, to enjoy ourselves before we all got shipped off to our various prefectures, cities, and towns. I was, of course, making the most of it, for the next day I'd be shipped to some tiny little cho in the deepest Japanese inaka. Cho means town, by the way. Inaka means countryside. You have an idea of how *thrilled* I was to end up in the middle of nowhere.

Which, of course, explains why half a dozen of us were on our way back to Keio Plaza half-plastered at ten in the evening. And why none of us were particularly paying attention to anything.

It turned out to be the greatest thing that ever happened to me.

Oh, it was scary, at first, I'll admit. I mean, I'd seen those silly Godzilla movies on TV when my older sister was bored. I thought monsters weren't real, that they were men in silly rubber suits. In fact, that's what I thought he was at first. A man in a rubber suit. So did the others. I swear we acted like ten year olds when we first saw him. Until he attacked Angie.

I never saw what he did to her, but he was fast enough to catch all of us - Jen was next, followed by Liz, and then Erin. I got caught next, and I saw Jamie being attacked before my vision faded.
