SPD ep 1 and 2 (spoilers)

I posted this on INEBG, but I also wanted to comment on it here for those not on INEBG.

I have to admit, I was a little bit unsure on this one, but I actually liked it. I was not sure I would, as Deka was the first sentai I'd seen from the beginning, and I wasn't sure how well Buena Vista and VRP would adapt it. I'm still not sure I'm going to, but the first episode wasn't too bad.

The only characters I didn't really like were Syd and Sky. Syd was okay, but she was the type of personality that I would not ever get along with, and Sky exaggerated some of Hoji's worst traits (Hoji being Deka's blue). Sky might grow on me if he grows as a character, though, both of them might. (Some of Sky's lines sound scarily like what comes out of my mouth daily, so it may be that the character is just a bit too much like me for comfort, though I hope I'm never *that* arrogant....) Z was cool, Jack was okay (though the poor guy had to come last in the group to fit Ban's sentai footage, where I thought he'd jump in to something like this). Bridge I actually *liked*, which I wasn't prepared to do because he's got Sen - my favorite of the Dekarangers - uniform, but he seemed like a cool cross between Sen and Oz from Buffy.

I wish that B group didn't have powers, though I did like Bridge's and Z's. It was odd to have Bridge have Jasmine's (Dekayellow's) powers, and I hope they don't use it as a substitute for Sen's flashes of instinct.

Eh. I'm going to have to watch this a few more times.

I was pleasantly surprised as well. And I'm with you on the characters.

The only thing about Sky I find interesting at this point is who his father is. :)

Bridge is growing on me. Jack and Z leapt out of the screen.

I have so much DT to write, though. :)

While I didn't see and don't know much about Deka, I was impressed by the way all five main characters (and the supporting ones for that matter) were vividly created as individuals, complete with conflicts, in only an hour. I have to say I like all of them so far, even Sky, who's attractive in an arrogant, sexist jerk kind of way. Jack and Z really came alive for me as idealistic heros (a little reluctantly on Z's part) but with some depth.

I was sceptical about Doggie Kruger at first - but in the second half they got his facial movements looking much better. Liked Cat's cool toughness - and all the guys on RangerBoard are drooling over her already.

Going to be an interesting season!
