Offtopicish

Date: 2005-06-14 09:03 pm (UTC)I came into the Sliders fandom due to some friends in the Tomorrow People fandom (among them Kyrie Daniels), but I first heard of the term either way back in Highlander fandom back in 1993 or 1994 or possibly way, way back in pre-internet Starman (1986 TV series) fandom (though Highlander fandom is more likely). My memory of Sliders fandom is rather foggy, as I wasn't really involved in it. You might ask
As for the term meaning, I think it meant the same then pretty much as it does now. A beta reader checked for spelling, grammar, characterization, cohesiveness... kind of an editor, really. There were some that just did one or the other, but a few who did all. (I had an absolutely fantastic one in Forever Knight fandom - Jennise Hall. Don't know if she's still on the 'net or in FK fandom, though.)
Hope this helped a little.

The term meaning the same thing is rather cool in that kept its continutiny. I guess the confusion some people feel regarding the word is a lack of knowledge as the term migrated from one fan fiction community to another.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. :)

Date: 2005-06-15 01:34 am (UTC)The more I think about it, the more likely it is that it was from one of my earliest online fandoms - Highlander, Forever Knight, or Tomorrow People - rather than Starman fandom, as I think that they were still called proofreaders or editors back then. I do remember hearing the term before I was hooked into Sliders fandom. So, somewhere between 1993-1995.
