These boys are too pretty and I'm too old

estiroseMuch as I like to drool over the Japanese eyecandy, I have to admit I'm around twice Sato Takeru's age (he's cute, but much too young). This, and a discussion on HJU, made me think of why I appreciated Kamen Rider Hibiki when it aired.
Most of the last few Kamen Rider shows have featured young, eye-candy actors. I like eye-candy actors, nothing wrong with that. But occasionally, one likes to watch people of one's own age doing heroic things on television. For me, that happened with Kamen Rider Hibiki.
Hibiki's actor, and I presume Hibiki himself, are around my age. The actor for Zanki is as well (presumably the same for Zanki). While I have to admit that the characters I most felt were like me were Todoroki and Asumu, it was great having someone my own age being the hero. Hibiki was a hero - he might have been a bit odd at times, but he was a hero. Zanki - who could forget Zanki? Todoroki might have stolen the spotlight, but Zanki never gave up. He came pretty close to stealing the show himself.
I guess I liked all the characters (with maybe the exception of Shuki and Kiriya). It's a great show. A little disappointing at the end, but still good. Maybe it's just that two of the main Riders/Oni were my age.
That's why I paid attention to Hibiki, and to characters in other recent KR series that are/were my age. Why I like Isaka in Kamen Rider Blade, Hibiki and Zanki as mentioned before. In Kabuto, Tadokoro's actor is about my age too, as is the actress who played Tendou's mother in flashback and the actor who played Negishi. Nothing so far in Den-O, at least for the regulars (I haven't found the Imagin voice actors' ages yet), but I'm hopeful. Somebody besides Owner's actor has got to have been born before 1980....
