finalauraburst and not spamming the Flist)
I've been following a very interesting discussion on one of my email lists about various archiving methods, including our fond friend, the Pit of Voles. The person who posted the idea that archiving at the PoV is a good idea just so that there was good content for people to read is someone I look up to, so I'm gonna give it a try. But first, since I think it would be interesting, here's a poll or two under the cut.

The Pit can be good for making a name for yourself, yes, since it's so high traffic, but personally, I don't think it's worth it.

Date: 2008-04-06 02:40 pm (UTC)The Pit has its problems, very true, and I'm still deeply pissed about the whole scene divider thing. But - if you want your stuff to get exposure, it's the best place to post it.
I know some people do search LJ for fic, but personally I find it hard to find things outside of a few specialized communities, and not a good format for reading anything long. LJ is just not constructed as a fiction site. (I know lots of people will argue, which is fine, but that's the way I see things and I don't see myself changing that opinion anytime soon.)
Also a lot of people look down on ff.net because of both the low average level of fic there and because of the autocratic way it's run. Fine, both are justified, and I can understand why people don't want to use it. The thing is, it's still the only central site where a lot of people go. There are other sites for fanfic and a few specifically PR fanfic sites, but none of them attract a big audience the way ff.net does, and IMO many people don't want to make the rounds of various sites looking for stuff. I know I don't.
And finally - I know posting at ff.net might be seen as looking for popularity - maybe it is, but I would put it another way. Part of why we write is to have people read what we've written. Some people are comfortable with being read only by their friends and whoever finds their LJ or their website, but what's wrong with wanting a larger audience?
Whew, this turned into total tl;dr, didn't it?
