Or maybe that's the not-so-great fanfiction.net experiment?

Anyway, to recap, I've been avoiding fanfiction.net like the plague, except for certain sections and certain authors (and modding FAB means that I see certain sections every single week). After reading a very interesting discussion, I decided to choose a bunch of stories (12 in all with a total of 16 chapters) that I felt were decent and post them. Most of them are Kamen Rider fics, mixed in with Sentai and the odd other fic.

(BTW, sincere apologies to [livejournal.com profile] capncosmo who got to put links to 7 fics, 3 batches of icons, and a discussion of Kiva on the last [livejournal.com profile] finalauraburst post.)

Part of my interest was how easy it was to use the document manager to upload/post fics. The second was how long I'd last before I became too frustrated to post same. The third was to get an idea of the activity counts for the various fandoms I post in (albeit not all at ffn). I did not expect reviews, I had no idea of hitcount, and I wasn't expecting to end up in any c2s.

I sorted the twelve fics in order of rough wordcount. My first 8 fics listed were as follows:

1. Dust and Flames, Kamen Rider 555 (approx 256 words)
2. No Choice at All, Boukenger (approx 283 words)
3. Stubborn Too, Kamen Rider 555 (approx 344 words)
4. Falling, Kamen Rider 555 (approx 352 words)
5. Not So Bad Luck, Kamen Rider Den-O (approx 366 words)
6. Being a Hero, Power Rangers Mystic Force (approx 378 words)
7. The Cat Has What She Wants, Boukenger (approx 604 words)
8. Goodbye From Where It Hurts, Kamen Rider Hibiki (approx 692 words)

How one posts a story on fanfiction.net, and related observations:

I had previously had an account here, so I didn't have a waiting period before I could post. IIRC, you have to wait 4 days before posting if you're using a new account. Mine's been around since 2001, so I was pretty safe. Like all users, however, I had to agree to the Terms of Service in order to post fic. And despite the fact that the "Yes, I've read the terms of service" thing is supposed to last seven days (I've been posting for maybe 5 at this point), I've had to agree to the freaking terms of service three times.

So, on Saturday, I started posting. I unfortunately didn't put together a "here's when I post the next part" bit together until later on, so I started with posting 2/day over the weekend. Along the way, I established a 12-hit wait, which was later changed to 13, and then to 20. And then got wacky when I came home to discover that a fic had made 80 hits while I was at work.

Of the fics in the first bunch, I figured the PRMF would have the most hits, being in a really busy section. The two Boukenger fics would probably do pretty good as well, being relatively recent series. The Den-O should be good as well. The 555 and Hibiki fics, I had no clue about.

Started posting. I pulled the fics off of Inkwell, adding disclaimers and making minor adjustments as needed. I then saved each fic as it came time to post it, saving it in .doc format. I had minor problems with the formatting, even saving in .doc format; it lost the line breaks on the title/penname/c notice. Fortunately, a little work got me a cooperating set of lines, and any formatting I forgot was easily cleared up. I experiences the most problems getting my first fic to format correctly as I hadn't used the system for a year or two.

I expect to have a few more problems with fics that require section breaks, like "Turns to Dust" and "Boxed In", but for the simple fics of the first 8, I had few to no problems. I forgot to save my edits the first time and had to hastily resave and replace the first fic to correct it. This turned out to be no major problem.

The actual story section has changed a tiny bit since I last used it. You still select section and fandom first, but it keeps track of what fandoms you post in, which made it easy to post subsequent fics in some fandoms. (Mine only had Power Rangers and Earth: Final Conflict in there initially.) As I mentioned earlier, sometimes I had to re-agree to the terms of service when I shouldn't have, but that was a minor irritant.

Once you're in the create story section, you add the details like title, summary, language, rating, characters (some fandoms), completeness, and of course the document you edited in the document manager. The stories showed up pretty fast, and the story alerts for the fics came through fast. (I'm presuming the 25 people that have me on author alert got theirs as well.)

How the fics fared:

As I said earlier, I wasn't expecting reviews or c2 adds, and I had no clue on how many hits I was expecting to get. As it turned out, about 3/4 of my fics were added to c2s, 1 got a review, and one was added to someone's favorites (as well as chapter alert, for some bizarre reason). This is, mind you, after 260 hits betwen eight stories.

In terms of the 8 fics, as expected the PRMF fic "Being A Hero" has had the most hits, garnering some 80 hits between the time I posted it and the time I came home and could check on my hits. Right now, as of this posting, it's had 112 fics.

The next two in terms of hits were one of the Boukenger fics ("No Choice At All", which featured Masumi), and "Not So Bad Luck", the Den-O fic. As I suspected, their relatively recent showings gave them more readers.

The next two were Kamen Rider 555 fics, "Dust and Flames" (featuring Kaido) and "Stubborn Too" (featuring Yuji). After that was, surprisingly, the other Boukenger fic ("The Cat Has What She Wants"), followed by a Kamen Rider 555 fic ("Falling") and lastly, "Goodbye From Where It Hurts", which was the Hibiki fic (and has 8 hits at this point).

Interestingly enough, of the eight fics, that last fic was the one that got a c2, a chapter alert, a favorite, and the only review so far. And this is a fic for a series that is looked at with mixed feelings by KR fen!

Looking forward, I have 4 more fics and 8 more "chapters" to post. One is a Kamen Rider Kabuto fic, one is a Forever Knight fic, and the last two are a heavily OC (not OOC) KR 555 story called "Turns to Dust", and of course, "Boxed In", my Kiva AU. The Kabuto I expect to do well. The FK I have no clue on, and given the reaction to the other 555 fics, I don't expect that fic to get a lot of hits. Boxed In, given that it's the current series, might or might get a lot of reads. I'll have to see once I get past chapter 1.
