Mio awoke with a start on top of something hard and rocky. She remembered stepping through the barrier at Camp, smiling at her ex-husband Taiga as he reluctantly let her leave. “Maybe we’ll see each other again,” she’d said, knowing that there was only a slim chance that she’d be alive after she left... but at least it made things easier for her friends to let go and let her go on.
She hadn’t expected to arrive back to her homeworld. She wondered if Taiga and Wataru-san remembered things there, or if she’d come back to a Taiga who still expected her to be his wife. Was she even still Queen? She hoped not.
Reluctantly, she opened her palm and concentrated on the symbol, which flickered into life. Still Queen, then.
Should she even take the risk? Go back to Wataru and to Taiga?
But she couldn’t hide forever. Taiga would surely know he had a Queen; he’d told her that he’d sensed her before he even knew her. He probably still needed his Queen, even if he’d given her up back at Camp.
In any case, he and Wataru-san had always defended her to their parents; at least they were there for her. She should be there for them back.
She got up to see what she’d arrived against; she had to sit down, lightheaded, when she read the words. Someone had made this marker, and she bet it was Taiga; it was the kind of gesture her husband would have made.
Mio wondered how often he was visiting her grave and if she should scare him by just being there. Or maybe Wataru-san would come. Either way, she didn’t want to scare them, she didn’t want to drive them away, no matter how much she deserved it sometimes.
At least she was fed; Taiga had made her do it just before she left, just in case she came back alive.
And she was alive. She couldn’t be upset about that.
She resolved to stay there until somebody came, and hoped somebody would come soon.
