"A penny for your thoughts," Amanda offered, and Nick looked at her. It was yet another day, yet another Immortal, or so it felt like sometimes to Nick. He was getting tired of the world of the Immortals; if he didn't *like* Amanda, he'd quickly leave. But he'd tried once before, and his heart lead him back.

His heart lead him back to Amanda and the whole world she was part of, like he didn't know how to leave. So he spent the time trying to adjust, as if he was part of it. Which, as Amanda could protest, he wasn't supposed to be.

"Nick?" Amanda asked, starting to sound worried. Sometimes she genuinely was; sometimes she just sounded like she was, like he was important to her, like all of this wasn't heart breaking.

"I'll be fine," he said roughly. He might even feel it someday, feel like all of this world was normal, everyday, not something he'd stepped into by accident and was starting to call home. A world of swords and people who lived centuries, and other people who recorded their lives. How crazy was that?

He was sure he was in the Watchers' books somewhere, as Amanda's... lover? No, her friend, her business partner, the person she dragged into things and he followed willingly. He knew that there was a way out of there, a way to be normal, a way to be as safe as a cop knew it could be if he was careful.

But that world outside was just as dangerous as this world, just less exotic. Maybe that's why he stayed, that's why Amanda worried, that's why he was there. Because he knew that he belonged there, and he would never leave again.
