Remix Revival is open! (It's at https://archiveofourown.org/collections/remixrevival2018)

I am trying to find something coherent to write other than "Wow!" on the remix of my fic. I'd guessed that it was a remix of "The Stones of Home", where I have a wandering Yae run across Mafuyu, decide to get him some company from Minakami, and return home to watch over her birth village. (Mostly as an excuse to stick in a few of my favorite Japanese spirits and make an entry for the BCL writing/artwork contest.)

Summary:

They owe a duty to their family. Even the family they've forgotten.

In this one, Yae is wandering around Himuro Mansion, with a voice calling her (Sae). She runs into Mafuyu, who is there, of course, because of what he did in the canon Fatal Frame I ending. They spend time together, talking about their family as they slowly try to unearth why Yae is still there instead of joining the rest of the spirits that left Himuro. She eventually realizes she's supposed to be someplace else, and heads off to the remains of Minakami village.

I'm not quite sure when the fic is set; from the description at the end, it might be after Fatal Frame II (Yae sits at the bench that's at the end of that game), but she weeds around one of the Twin Guardian statues, so I am a bit confused. I know it's not where I set it, which was a few centuries later in a place with no humans.

That being said, it is a heck of a whole lot more coherent than "The Stones of Home" (I reread it recently). It's a loving study of Yae and of Mafuyu, who never got to interact in canon. Two generations get to talk to each other about what they have in common, and Yae finally realizes where she belongs.

(There are few things remaining from "The Stones of Home", which is fine by me. The fact that Mafuyu meets Yae and they talk is one of them and there's a mention of the kappa that Yae mentions meeting in my original fic as well. I think that's about it! Instead, there's a lot of callbacks to the games, and I just have such a soft spot for the locations of these two games that I'm always glad to read fic about them.)
