Characters: Kurosawa Sae, Petra (My Time At Portia)
Summary:
I'd had the idea of using a character from an entirely different fandom as the Builder (player character) of "My Time at Portia" in a fic, and it so happened that the Into A Bar dice gave me the opportunity. I chose Sae for one of the two slots, and got Petra for the other. (Which is hilarious, as last time I got Maru from Stardew Valley, who is the same general type of character.)
I knew that Sae was going to be tricky, as she is a ghost in Fatal Frame II, and a malicious ghost at that. But there was a non-malicious girl that existed before that, so that is the Sae I picked up. I realized living!Sae's characterization... leaves a bit to be desired. Literally, her entire character is "We'll save the village, I'll be with Yae, Yae will come back at some point for me" with a little bit about Itsuki's tragedy. So I pulled a bit from a fic I wrote about Mayu where she loved books, specifically history books, and I gave Sae the same habit. It fit well with Petra, because one of the things Petra does is sit in Central Plaza reading books.
(I swear that Firion and co from Final Fantasy II have more characterization than living!Sae, and they come from an era where there wasn't really room for that sort of thing!)
Since I had to get Sae into the MTaP universe, I looked at what we knew about the existing world. It's mentioned several times that Portia is built on the ruins of Dubei. I thought it was a fictional town until I googled and found that there really is a Dubei Township in China (MTaP was made by a company in China). It's away from the coast, so I'm guessing that part of China is underwater now and Dubei/Portia is now on the coast. I extrapolated that and made Japan into probably a dozen to two dozen islands. Minakami is now one of those islands, as is Himuro and all the other Fatal Frame locations. The island names come from a very mutilated version of the (Mandarin?) Chinese name for Japan.
I had Maurice (Pa) and his expedition find a very alive Sae (whose timeline I split from when she lost Yae in the forest but before the villagers found her). She of course would speak whatever variant of Japanese was common around her area, and we don't know what language the people of Portia speak. So I didn't kill my brain, I had them speaking a variant of Mandarin. Sae had to learn that language and all the new readings of characters she was familiar with. Then she got questioned to death (not literally!) by one of Maurice's colleagues and Maurice had enough and took her home so that his sister Kendra and daughter Fan Ci (in other words, Fancy, my Mint-romancing Builder from various fics) could help her learn to live in her new society.
But Kendra and Maurice kept in touch even as Maurice continued to explore, so Maurice offered Sae (whose grasp of the local language was actually getting very very good) his workshop in Portia. Fan Ci had gotten married and had no interest in being a builder, apparently!
I have this story set Month 1 Day 2 (where you have the builder test and haven't slept well because of the holes in your floor) because until very very recently my Builder was extremely exhausted after fixing the floor. (Hint to new players: If you go behind the cafe building where Presley likes to hang out in the morning, you can pick up dried apple slices from a chest. Eating them will give you more stamina!) It seemed the perfect time to plop Sae down on Petra's favorite bench and having them meet.
The story originally had more of a exposition dump in my head, but thankfully Petra decided that she'd actually heard of what happened and decided to just go "okay, this person is the person I've heard of, cool!". And of course, Sae wanted to talk about books and Petra loves talking about books, so it went well!
And not related, but I've been replaying Final Fantasy II. I remember the general plot, but apparently don't ask me to navigate around the last dungeon before the very final ones!
