Boyfriend Dungeon (Video Game)
Jun. 23rd, 2023 12:04 pmNo, nothing to do with BDSM. It's a combo Dating Sim and Roguelike. Yes, this does make sense in context, and no, it's not the weirdest dating sim I've played - that honor goes to Hatoful Boyfriend. It is very LGBT friendly, but it's got some dark plot points.
I'm enjoying it so far, despite some annoyance at having to define my own controller config on my desktop (which I will now have to redo to fit the official one for the Steam Deck so I don't hit the wrong buttons when fighting).
So the plot goes something like this: You, who have never had a date in your life, go to Verona Beach, California for the summer so that your cousin Jesse can set you up on some dates. Some of these dates - in fact, most of the romanceable characters - can turn into weapons. You fight in dungeons using your love interests (and other characters) and gain relationship points that way along with the usual dating sim way. As your relationship develops, you gain new abilities with your partners' weapon forms. There's a great variation in weapon types - most are some kind of sword, but one character is an axe, another is a lightsaber, and another may be some kind of staff weapon or halberd.(ETA: It turns out that weapons are not the only things that people can turn into!)
You can choose male, female, or nonbinary (my character is nonbinary) and change up their name/appearance/pronouns at any time.
So far most of the romanceable characters are men, but so far I've met at least two nonbinary dating partners, and one woman. ETA: Apparently humans aren't the only ones who can turn into weapons, I just met a... cat?
The only characters I completely don't like so far are Eric (who seems to want to be a rival to whatever person you're on a date with) and Sunder (one of the romanceable characters that definitely falls under the "dark and dangerous" trope).
ETA2: I have now beat the game twice, though I still have to beat the final boss in the bonus dungeon. It's short, but it's fun. You of course get a slightly different ending depending on your choice of romance (or in one character's case, platonic friendship).
ETA3: Without spoilering much, one of the potentially triggering things is that you're required to read all the texts and answer them to complete the game.
