Cake and Growth

Ahim walked into the main room of the Galleon, unsurprised to see the kitchen light on. All of them raided the kitchen at night, much to Don-san's annoyance. Not wanting to bother whatever teammate was there, she peeked in to make sure she wasn't disturbing them.

Inside, Gai was working on something, humming quietly to himself as he mixed ingredients. "Gai-san," she said softly, not wanting to alarm him and ruin his project. From the intensity on his face, it was probably for some meal in the near future.

He let out a short, surprised scream, but fortunately, whatever he was making remained in the bowl. He put it down gingerly, just staring at her, and then put a hand behind his head. "Oh! Sorry. I was concentrating."

"Indeed you were, Gai-san," she said. "I didn't mean to disturb your preparations." She didn't recognize what he was making, but she knew that he'd been working on new recipes. He'd been fascinated with the new variety of foodstuffs out in space, and had taken to seeing what he could make with them.

"Ah, it's nothing!" he exclaimed. "I'm just making a cake."

"Isn't that Joe-san's…." She didn't want to say that making cakes was exclusive to Joe-san, but he seemed to do all the cake-baking on the ship.

"Yeah, but I wanted to make something special! It's our anniversary, after all. All of us together."

Something clicked in her mind. "You mean, it's been a year since Marvelous-san accepted you onto the crew." Had it really been that long? It seemed hard to believe.

"Yes!" he exclaimed, jumping up. "I wanted to celebrate. After all, first years only come one time! Plus, I want us to be together for many years to come!"

She had no doubt that Marvelous-san wanted his crew with him forever, too. "So, it's a good luck charm, of sorts." That, she could understand; her people had customs like that.

"Of course! Though it's mostly because I want to thank everybody for having me on board." Gai grinned at her. "After all, I didn't make the best first impression."

A year ago, he probably wouldn't have recognized that. It was a sign of how much he'd changed. Of course, his enthusiasm hadn't; he was still as energetic as he had been when they'd first met him. But he was starting to notice when he was being overwhelming.

Maybe living in space had mellowed him, made him realize things. Or maybe he was growing up.

It really didn't matter. Marvelous-san would keep him on board as long as Gai-san wanted to be on board. Gai-san was crew now.

But it was nice of him to bake a cake. She nodded at his enthusiasm, fetched the kettle, made her tea as Gai turned back to his cake batter. They were at peace, and they were together. And that's all that mattered.
