estirose: A man looks at his reflection in the mirror. (Mafuyu - Fatal Frame)

When I put up the Fatal Frame fic "By Ghostly Ear", I forgot to warn that it contained nonsexal dubcon/ an abusive relationship. I should know better, and I'm really sorry if anybody was triggered. I usually remember to label.

Spoilers for the Fatal Frame game, mention of the canon ending and the pre-boss cutscene, abusive relationships, and the story "By Ghostly Ear".

So, "By Ghostly Ear" is the third in an AU where Kirie decides to kill Mafuyu (and Miku) instead of absorbing him as she does in canon. In this story, Mafuyu wakes up to find out he's a ghost, and basically in an unwilling relationship with the Malice-infected, evil Kirie. As far as Kirie is concerned, Mafuyu is the reincarnation of her lost lover and is going to act as such. And Miku is Mafuyu's sister and she's always wanted a family who cares for her.

All of Kirie's actions are Malice-influenced. While it enjoys the pain and suffering of the ghosts in the mansion, this is a special opportunity for it to cause more pain and agony. Therefore, Kirie's mind has been warped to believe that he is the reincarnation of her lover and she cannot let anyone get in the way of their relationship this time. Miku is Mafuyu's sister and the family she can now have now that she is in charge of the whole place and nobody can take her away, either. To Kirie, it's a desperate grabbing at family, and the Malice is taking full advantage of this.

Mafuyu and Miku, in my mindcanon for How Ghosts Work For The Most Part (the weirdness of Fatal Frame III's daytime apparitions notwithstanding), cannot leave the Himuro Mansion grounds. At the very least, even if it's not true for all the Fatal Frame ghosts, it's true for Miku and Mafuyu in this circumstance. The way they died means that they're Minor Vengeance Spirits (like Kirie, but much much weaker), though they haven't been corrupted yet into that role because the Malice wants to enjoy their horrified reactions as they watch each other descend into madness.

There's a huge power imbalance there for the siblings because Kirie holds all the power in their relationship. She can cause pain, punishing them for not doing what she wants. Her moods rapidly shift according to what the Malice thinks will hurt her and those around her the most. If it wants her to be paranoid about the siblings, then she will be paranoid. And they can't leave the mansion, of course. At this point, neither of them knows this, but Mafuyu wants to cure Kirie and won't leave her until he can anyway.ac

Incidentally, she's already killed one would-be rescuer, who in my head is Aso Yuu from III, but might change because I like Yuu.

Per the University of Oregon Counseling Center page on abusive relationships (URL, accessed July 28, 2012, author Mark Evans Ph.D., date unknown) here are the main behaviors that I see Kirie doing in the fic:

URL: http://counseling.uoregon.edu/dnn/SelfhelpResources/SexualAssaultSexualAbuse/AbusiveRelationships/tabid/388/Default.aspx

* Controlling behavior. This is her family, they belong to her, and they will do whatever she says (and make her happy). She'll protect them from others, but it's because they're hers.
* Intense jealousy of friends, family, and other social contact. This applies more to Mafuyu than Miku for Kirie. She should be the center of the siblings' universe and Mafuyu's love. If Miku wants to worship her big brother, Kirie doesn't care as long as Mafuyu loves her more than he loves Miku. But of course, Miku needs to tend to Kirie's needs, too. Anybody who comes looking for Mafuyu and MIku will die, because they'd take the siblings away from her.
* Interrogating one's partner about time spent apart from the relationship. I can see the Malice driving Kirie to believe that Mafuyu and Miku might be turning against her if they're out of her sight for a while. To some extent, she's also got a need to protect her 'family', in the "nobody can hurt you but me" still of abuse.
* Demanding or coercing sex. I don't see this happening with Miku, because Kirie's pretty much straight, but I could see her trying this with Mafuyu. On the other hand, anything is possible with the Malice and it might decide that the former could happen.
* Taking things without asking. This falls under the whole belief that Mafuyu and Miku are hers. Admittedly, they have one possession between them (the Camera Obscura), but if it's theirs, it's hers.
* Physical abuse or threat of physical harm. Kirie is not beyond punishing her family if they displease her (or if the Malice makes her think they're displeasing her/plotting against her). Being torn apart won't kill either of them, because they're dead, but it will hurt.
