Yuletide 2012 reveals!

I wrote eight fics for Yuletide! (I forgot to add in my last-minute one when I wrote my "guess the story" post.)
Here they are, in vague order of posting:
Makes the Beautiful World (Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger), which was betaed by the ever-wonderful
tptigger.
Sun, Rise High (Space Vehicles)
Worry Never Solved (Glitch (Video Game))
For Be Not Afraid (Zero aka Fatal Frame)
Alight in that Flame (Zero: Shisei no Koe aka Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented)
Skylimit Friendship (Enchanted Glass - Diana Wynne Jones)
In The Ruins (Zero: Shisei no Koe aka Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented)
Cheerful Careful Helpers (Glitch (Video Game))
I got quite a few hits between my stories this year. I'm convinced that nothing will ever get to the level of popularity that "Versal and Marginalia" enjoys, but people seemed to enjoy them. The highest was "Cheerful Careful Helpers", at 60-odd fics, while the lowest was "Alight in that Flame", at under 10. ("Alight" was an extremely specialized... well, not request, but the recipient said that they liked zombie apocalypse AUs, and my brain went weird places with that.)
Most of these had lyric titles, with a few exceptions. ("Skylimit Friendship" is half song title, "In The Ruins" just titled itself, and "Cheerful Careful Helpers" came from an inspirational app aimed at writers.)
Makes the Beautiful World: This year, I ventured into new territory by tackling a Sentai series I'd barely seen. (Yuletide does this to you, getting you into new fandoms.) I'd been curious about Goushi ever since I saw Gokaiger, and when I saw that there was a request for Goushi/Geki, I added it to my offers. (The other two fandoms for the recipient were TimeRanger, which I haven't seen much of either, and Go-Busters, which I wasn't following.)
Once I got it though, I got kind of stuck. Then I saw the AU mention, somehow my brain took a turn, and I was suddenly writing a story where Otome and Burai might get married (because I like Otome and I like Burai despite everything), and I plotted hurt/comfort for Geki and Goushi. The idea for the rockfall and the narrow pass comes from the Robin McKinley novel "The Blue Sword", but in this one, it's the villain burying the heroes and not the other way around.
I wasn't intending to write Otome/Burai! But I think they make a not-bad couple. I was hoping I'd end up with romantic Geki/Goushi, but they spent most of the fic friendshippy, and the fic didn't get to as much romantic as I wished.
This fic was finished far later than I thought it would. I had trouble figuring out how to end it, because it was one of those fics that was hard to end. I literally finished it 39000 feet over Iceland - normally I can't write fic on planes, but the characters insisted!
Worry Never Solved was written before Glitch went away, and it reminds me of all the good times I had in the game. Admittedly, I only had a limited amount of time before the game shut down, but I enjoyed it anyway. Toru and Yoshihiro are a Native Worm and a human respectively and they appeared in a Kamen Rider Kabuto fic of mine.
For the picture, I quickly changed outfits/colors on my main and an alt, which is why Toru and Yoshihiro don't have names on the image. I snapped the same image from each character's side so that I could wipe the name out on the second shot, and then had to quickly change my main back so that Lazulisong wouldn't notice. The hilarious part was that we had each other friended, and she came on while I was in the middle of taking the snaps!
Sun, Rise High was rewritten a lot before it made it into its current form. The original version was a lot longer, but I was worried about it sounding ableist, so I rewrote it a few times. It's about Opportunity dislodging her friend Spirit, in a universe where NASA never stopped talking to her. I made brief note of Curiosity, but she didn't fit in this version much. On the other hand, I did at least manage to retain discussions about the Pioneers vs the Voyagers vs the Mars rovers, though in between drafts, I had to drop mention of the Pathfinder and Sojourner. I was delighted to find out that the Voyagers are still transmitting, though, and at least I can apply artistic license to where I located Opportunity?
In For Be Not Afraid (a song title, but it does reflect back to what Ryozo says when he's shaking you to death during both fights with him), I wanted to explore Yae's determination to make the best of Himuro Mansion. It didn't last, of course, but at least she tries to sort things out and subordinate her feelings (as she thinks she should) . I think Ryozo and Yae are fascinating, especially since Yae changes a bit between the teenager in II and the mother in I.
Alight In That Flame happened when I was checking to make sure I'd read the Ryozo/Yae prompt right. The plot bunny popped up unexpectedly, and so I wrote a zombie apocalypse AU, featuring Rei. In this universe, Rei married Yuu earlier in canon, Kei has been taking care of Mio and Mayu for a while, Misaki and Yuu are second cousins or so, and Mafuyu never stepped into the real Himuro mansion. In fact, this is in, more or less, the same universe as the (un)official Zero novel.
The zombies led by the headless priests (who exist as skeletons) from I, along with Pole Bearer from II, Broken Neck from II (I wanted Broken Neck from I, but I had to face the fact that she made a better ghost than she did a zombie), Long Arms from I, one of the Pacifiers/shrine maidens from III, and Dr. Hatagiri from IV. Mio's job is derived from the Runners in "Zombies, Run!", as well as the long-time joke about her running speed in II, and Miku's bait traps are from another zombie survival game.
Skylimit Friendship was written after I was reading through my beta comments from tptigger and realized that I hadn't written her a fic. Oops. Didn't have time to review Tower Prep, so I picked up Enchanted Glass and read through it. I have to say, I like the relationship between Aidan and Rolf and Aidan and Groil the best, it figures. I didn't want to even touch the whole Andrew-Aidan blood relationship, though I have Rolf allude to Andrew's worry about it. So, I wrote a fluffy story about Aidan and Rolf.
In the Ruins was written because I noticed the recipient didn't have a gift yet, and so I was ready to write them one so they didn't end up on the pinch hit list. Their writer got it in anyway, so I didn't have to worry, but by that point it was almost finished. I'd intended to make it Rei/Kei, but it ended up as an ensemble piece about the three playable characters in Fatal Frame III, and how they were coping. What I did not expect, however, was for all of them to decide to go to Himuro and bug Mafuyu. I did try to retcon the whole "Kei is the only person who can move the damn dresser" idiocy in the game. I do think that Miku is probably the least recovered of the three, because she was drawn in by Mafuyu's (presumed) death, and she didn't have the direct closure that Rei did.
For Careful Cheerful Helpers, I was running out of time to write fic, but I noticed that one of the pinch hitters requested Glitch. I wanted to write them something happy, so I decided I'd write a small double drabble for them, about a world where the Giants woke up, but were able to keep their dreams going.

Date: 2013-01-02 03:54 am (UTC)I have to confess that I went through every Zyu post you wrote (along with a few others, which is where Yumi came from), and read every Geki/Goushi fic of yours, to get a feel of what you liked best. (And then had quite a few moments of terror, because goshdarnit, I wanted to write you a fic that you'd like, and I was scared I wasn't going to be able to do that.)
Which is a long way of saying that I'm really glad you liked the fic!
