estirose: The words "Chophead Tinybits" in a speech bubble. (Chophead Tinybits - Girl Genius)
So, I just got the notification that Froyo is available for my phone. (Froyo is version 2.2 of the Android OS. Android is based off of Linux.)

Except... I have to have Windows in order to install it. No Mac version, no Linux version. I suspect that this is some asshattery on HTC's side, so I'm not inclined to complain at T-Mobile. Luckily for me, I am geeky enough to triple-boot my machine and do have a Windows partition, but it is not my primary OS.

This is the same problem that I had when I was trying to use an iPod with a Linux machine. Now, with that, I expected issues; Apple just does not do Linux (I can understand that Linux in general has a very small userbase, but it sucks), and it was something that I could pretty much run without a computer. Also, it was proprietary hardware and software, so while I wasn't very happy, I had bought the iPod at a time when I did have a Mac. And every so often, I could boot into Windows in order to sync, if I had to.

I'm more annoyed at HTC (and maybe a little at T-Mobile), because Android is open source. They could have built installers for OSes other than Windows. Linux is open source; Mac OS is UNIX-based. If anything, not only should those two OSes, which are closer in source code to Android, have gotten apps for the upgrade, but we should have gotten them before the Windows users did!

You know, I'm inclined to get an iPhone next time, just because at least then I could be assured that they'd develop for my OS.
