Into a bar and Remix Revival!
Jun. 30th, 2019 01:47 pmSignups for
intoabar opened today! For those of you not familiar, it's a crossover challenge where you choose one character from one fandom, and then choose 1-4 other fandoms that you're willing to write in. Then, the mods choose a character from one of the other fandoms and you have to write these two characters meet up someplace. I last did it in 2015 and it was fun, but I was busy the next few times they did it, so this will be the year that I do it again. It's not a gift exchange, so the only person you disappoint if you don't do it is yourself.
All of my previous intoabar entries have been Fatal Frame characters with other fandoms (I've crossed that series with Kamen Rider Kiva (Yae Kurosawa/Munakata), Hatoful Boyfriend (Kei Amakura), and the 1990s Tomorrow People (Miku Hinasaki)), but this year I decided to switch up and have Tim Goodman, the protagonist of Pokemon Detective Pikachu, as one of the people involved. Since Detective Pikachu is based off of a video game, the rest of my choices this year were also video games of one type or another: Magical Diary, Stardew Valley, and Fantasy Life. Hopefully the mods won't be confused by Magical Diary having a sequel in pre-release state (Wolf Hall), but if there's a character from the sequel, no big deal. I've got the demo and might get the pre-release if I get that fandom.
remixrevival is opening up for signups on July 1! A remix is taking some or all of a story and writing it how you would have written it. I got a very lovely one last year that I would not have known was written off of mine had it not been part of this challenge (Fatal Frame; I wrote essentially "Yae meets a bunch of monsters and her great-grandson" and my remixer wrote "Yae gets to know Mafuyu"). It's inspired me to look at someone else's story from new angles this year instead of doing the POV-style swap I tend to do.
Choosing fandoms to sign up with in remix is a bit interesting, because you're not saying you're going to remix in or be remixed in a certain fandom. For the "recipient" (it's gifted to you even though it's not really written for you), since your remixer can choose any fic in any fandom that's not a WIP or on your do-not-remix list, you have to choose enough fandoms so that someone knows what you write in, but not too many, and maybe choose more popular fandoms rather than obscure ones. (Some restrictions apply - see official rules for details.) Choosing fandoms to sign up in as a writer is interesting! At the beginning, I usually just go with some very odd fandoms on my list, and then as people sign up, I look at what they write and if there are fandoms I'm familiar with and fics I'm interested in remixing, I pick one of the fandoms they're "requesting" and add it to my offers.
For my list, I'm sticking in one specific entry in three umbrella fandoms: Power Rangers Dino Thunder (might end up being RPM instead), Kamen Rider Gaim, and Fatal Frame I. People looking to write in a Kamen Rider, Power Rangers or Fatal Frame fandom can now see I write in these series. I've also got Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger in there, but less to represent the Super Sentai umbrella than because it's a very popular season. Final Fantasy II is part of a large umbrella fandom, but people either really love it or really hate it so I don't expect someone to see it and think "Oh, Final Fantasy!" and look for Final Fantasy XV fics. I chose Stardew Valley becuse it's got a wide fandom, Pokemon Detective Pikachu because I've been writing it lately, and Sekirei to be totally random. I might change out Sekirei for Fantasy Life; I haven't decided.
