So I wrote to my (idiot) senator about the newest iteration of the EARN-IT act, and here's the response I got back, two months later:
"Thank you for writing to share your concerns regarding legislation intended to compel technology companies to more aggressively limit the spread of child sexual abuse material on their services. I appreciate hearing from you.
Too many children are sexually abused and then re-traumatized by the distribution of photographs and videos depicting their abuse online. Congress must invest more into protecting our children, helping them recover after unspeakable traumas, and holding the perpetrators and enablers of their abuse accountable. And technology companies need to invest more resources into keeping this unlawful content off of their services.
The 'Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies (EARN IT) Act' (S. 1207), introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would impose liability on technology companies for the child sexual abuse material posted and shared by third party users of their services. On May 4, 2023, I joined my colleagues in the Senate Committee on the Judiciary in voting to move this bill forward for consideration by the full Senate because I believe it has the potential to take real action to address the online sexual exploitation of children.
However, I share your concerns that this bill may negatively impact data privacy and free speech online, especially for diverse communities. That is why I am committed to working to address these concerns with my colleagues to ensure that the bill protects children from abuse, while maintaining privacy and freedom of speech online.
Once again, thank you for writing. Should you have any other questions or comments: (blah blah blah blah)."
He's a fucking idiot, for sure. I can't remember exactly what I said, but I suspect based on the next to last paragraph it was about the importance of encryption to protect personal information and the effect this bill would have to further prosecute people who don't hold to standard (conservative) Christian norms.
