I swear, they know I have to be getting out of here soon.

Ah well. Here's a little bit from "Itching for a Fight", a Cam POV of "Nowhere to Grow" that I've been working on under a pen name. Suggestions are appreciated, though I won't see them for a week.

"You deliberately went against my wishes by going off on your own," Cam's father intoned. "I'm terribly disappointed in you, Cam."

Cam sighed inwardly and debated for a minute on whether to ignore the voice or not. Of course, this was his father talking, and it would be stupid to pretend that he didn't hear him. He should have known he'd be caught; you didn't become a Ninja Master by being stupid or unobservant. Even if you were turned into a guinea pig. He put the water down near the additional seed samples that they'd had Shane and the others bring in, and turned around.

His father was sitting - standing, even, at the seat to Cam's computer. His guinea pig face seemed disappointed. It was a tone rarely used on Cam - he rarely did anything that caused his father to rebuke him. Get confused on him, yes. Rebuke him, no. "How did you know?" he asked, knowing he had to be more careful next time. Shane and the others would have told Sensei anyway, but he'd been hoping to avoid this confrontation.

"I'm a Ninja Master, and your father. Not a good combination if you're trying to pull a fast one." Cam felt the corner of his mouth lift in an unexpected half-smile. He might be being rebuked, but at least his father had a little bit of a sense of humor about it. It was why his father made such a good Sensei. He knew where to apply humor and where to apply discipline. But he only had that second before his father started talking again. "Son, I knew this day would come. It's in your blood." His father looked away at that, for some indefinable reason.

"Look, I have nothing against Shane, or Tori, or Dustin," Cam pointed out, trying to remind his father that he was mid-way into his twenties. "They've come a long way. But I know I can help! And not just in here, but out there...." He motioned towards the entrance of Ops.

"Cam," his father interrupted. "You could be the bravest Ranger of them all."

A flurry of emotions ran through Cam at that moment. One of them had to be anger, running through him like a torrent, and one of them was definitely disappointment. A small current of rational thought ran through him, reminding him that he wasn't trained in any of the three disciplines. He was sure that all his emotions were running about his face. "Then why didn't you choose me?" he blurted out.
