Overprotective

"Hi, Chris." The sound of his name made Chris "Perry" Halliwell turn around to look at the speaker. He'd stopped in Reefside for a place to brood, especially ever since Leo had started dogging him on the Golden Gate Bridge. While he had no doubt his Elder and father could keep track of him, he hoped that Leo was assuming that he was tending his charges in the area.

"Hi, Kira," Chris said, recognizing one of said charges. He caught the hesitance in her step, realized after a moment that it was a slight limp. She'd been injured in one of her battles, no doubt. "Do you...."

Kira shrugged and sat down. "Nah. It'll heal on its own. I just landed wrong fighting a Tyrranodrone."

Chris nodded. Kira was a Ranger and injuries happened. "You can't keep this a secret from your mother forever."

"I've kept it from her so far," Kira pointed out. "Besides, haven't you ever had to keep a secret from your folks?"

"It's not an issue," Chris said, trying not to snap. Kira didn't mean anything by it. She didn't know that he was from the future, and she certainly didn't know that Piper and Leo were his parents. It was general knowledge that he was only half whitelighter, but most witches assumed he was the product of some forbidden union. It did happen, after all. Paige was living proof of that.

"Lucky you," Kira said enviously. "Mom gets so overprotective sometimes. I know she has magic, and I don't, but I can totally defend myself now. Or at least get out of the way."

"Parents are like that," Chris said neutrally. He was lucky that he hadn't been pulled off his assignments when Leo had found out that he was his son. Fortunately, Wyatt's welfare had continued to be paramount, and he suspected Leo also wanted him around so that he could keep an eye on his second child. Or at least while Leo tried to be the father he'd never been. "They want what's best for their kids, or at least that's what I've been told."

Kira smiled at her own foot. "Yeah. And when do you stop being a kid? When you're twenty? Thirty? Forty?"

"I don't know if you ever do," Chris said softly. Here he was, twenty-two, trying to save the world, and his parents just wanted to protect him.

His charge nodded and flexed her foot, getting up and moving around. There was no hesitance, no limp. Amazing what a Ranger's body could do. "I guess not. See ya, Chris."

As she walked out of earshot, he watched her. In some ways, she was the lucky one. "I guess not, either," he said, and orbed back home.

Ooh, hey..
