Perpetual Momentum
by Estirose
c 2006

"Kagaami!" Kamishiro Tsurugi announced with his usual enthusiasm, prompting Kagami to inwardly groan.

While he had hoped that he'd be unobtrusive enough to escape Tsurugi's notice, he wasn't going to be that lucky. The young nobleman - and unknowing Worm - had latched onto him inexplicably as a friend, something Kagami suspected had to do with his original attempt to tell Tsurugi that he was a Worm. That had failed spectacularly, that was for sure.

It wasn't that Tsurugi was evil - his human persona was nice, if arrogant and naive - but his enthusiasm was boundless. He bounced over to Kagami, only the slight limp from one injured leg slowing him down. He had a smile on his face, a smile Kagami tried to match. If he was ever to set Tsurugi straight, he had to avoid alienating him, plus he really didn't want to have to face an enraged Tsurugi in battle.

Of course, he could do without Tsurugi trying to wash his back with Jiiya close by, or Tsurugi's sudden attraction to Kagami's coworker Misaki-san. But Tsurugi's enthusiasm was sometimes infectious; it had its own momentum, it seemed.

"Hi, Tsurugi," he said. The other young man didn't notice the lack of honorific, but he supposed it was because of the supposed friendship between the two. Or maybe it was a real friendship now. Tsurugi himself wasn't evil, his alter-ego was, and he was... he was a nice guy who meant well, even if he didn't do that well at what he attempted. "Are you looking for Misaki-san?"

Oddly enough, Kagami liked him, when he wasn't being embarassed by the other man's antics. And at least Tsurugi wasn't afraid of friendship, or at least the word, like Tendou was. Tsurugi made a production out of everything, including friendship, and one couldn't help but be swept up by that production, that enthusiasm. He wasn't afraid of anything; he wanted to conquer everything.

Maybe hanging around Tsurugi wasn't so bad, most of the time.

Tsurugi hopped down beside Kagami, still smiling. Still looking ready to bounce off and do something, probably something outrageous. Probably wanted to take Kagami with him.

"No, I was looking for you," Tsurugi said enthusiastically. "Come on!"

And before Kagami had a chance to protest, to think, to say he was on duty even when he wasn't, he was pulled away. Pulled towards the street, pulled towards the limo where Jiiya waited for the two of them. Pulled towards Tsurugi's adventures, pulled with a frozen smile on his face and the hope that he'd survive what Tsurugi wanted to do.

Maybe someday, tell him the truth about himself. But not that night. Not with Tsurugi and his endess energy. Kagami didn't have a chance.

So he stayed quiet and let Tsurugi pull him, let the boundless energy take him away.

Thanks!

I liked the Kagami and Tsurugi dynamic; they play well off of each other. :) I was writing this and I couldn't help but think of what energy Tsurugi had. (I should write him more; perhaps after I figure out alt-Tsurugi for "Discovering the Sun"....)
