This mostly is addressed at my US-based friends list, but I hope my non-US friends list people will listen too.

I don't know how many of you have heard about the zero-tolerance policy that hit Jhannet Sejas. She did a really stupid thing, I agree. But she should have been kicked out of the theater, not arrested. The manager thinks that they had no choice in the matter, since filming in a theater is a freaking crime with no exceptions for a clip that fell within fair use (which the law DOES NOT ALLOW FOR). May I note that a crime conviction, especially a felony, makes it hard for you to get a lot of jobs?

The MPAA has the pursestrings of the theaters, and like the RIAA, is too afraid of modern technology to embrace it. So they greedily try to protect their investment by having the congresscritters pass laws that benefit them, the Big Business, instead of consumers, holding figures up that they seem to have pulled from their asses. There's a big difference between someone who films a few seconds of a movie for a kid brother and a movie pirate, and likewise, there's a difference between someone who lends their CD or a music file to someone to introduce them to their favourite artist. But these big companies don't Get It. Their bottom line and their cash are the only things they care for. Given a chance, they'd abolish Fair Use!

So, I am asking my friends list to do the following things:

1. To boycott all Regal Entertainment cinemas (for those who live in the US) immediately. And while you're at it, possibly write a letter letting them know that you did it because of the Jhannet Sejas injustice. (Send it to whoever you think would be most effective.)

2. Starting 1/1/08 (this will give everybody who makes resolutions a chance to make it part of their resolutions for the next year), boycott all MPAA films, don't go to the theatres or buy the DVDs, or even rent the DVDs. This includes, for those outside the US, to boycott the same films. (Chances are that the Big Hollywood Blockbuster is probably MPAA.) For those inside the US, please be sure to tell the MPAA why you're not watching those movies.

I will be doing this. Will you join me and pledge to not help the MPAA's coffers? Even if it's a small amount of us, we can still make a difference.

(And yes, I am serious. I'm proud to say that I've been boycotting RIAA since 1/1/2006. I have absolutely zero problem doing the same for the MPAA.)

(Edited because it's not a felony, it's a misdemeanor. Doesn't make it any less stupid.)
(Edited again because it is apparently a felony to film in a theatre.)
