Summary: Taiga's baby brother was hidden from him for far too long.
Sometimes, Taiga hears rumors. Rumors that his mother's tryst with a human had resulted in a child. But as far as he could tell, the child doesn't exist; wherever his mother went, whatever his mother did, she hid the child well. The child doesn't exist in Fangire or human records.
His current researcher estimates the birth-date of his little brother or sister. It could only be a few months, the Kuramae scholar says, sometime in 1987 or 1988. His brother or sister is twenty at the youngest.
Taiga is sure that he'll find that child, embrace them. Take care of them like a big brother should. If his baby sibling is not in human records, then he or she is Fangire. Simple as that. If he has to do something to make them feel at home, he will.
Then one of his researchers comes through. Finds a date. A person. Kurenai Wataru. An address.
They traced Kurenai Otoya, found his house, found the current owner. The current owner shares his doctor, a Fangire one who rarely treats human patients. Taiga seethes with anger that the doctor never told him his little brother was alive. They could have grown up together, and Taiga wouldn't have been lonely. He remembers a Wataru when he was little. Had he run into his little brother, unawares?
So, Taiga goes to his younger brother's house. Pauses. Looks up and around. His little brother has his own house. His own place. Taiga's investigator gave him photographs of Kurenai Wataru and his house, but still Taiga pauses. Still Taiga hesitates.
And then he rings the doorbell. Takes a deep breath. What will this younger brother of his be like?
But he knows that his little brother will be a good person. He is of royal descent, after all, even with the human blood. Kurenai Wataru's father died before he was born; even with Taiga's mother as corrupted as she was, he had to be more Fangire than human.
A young man, matching Taiga's photographs, comes out. "Yes?"
"Kurenai Wataru?" he asks. "I'm Nobori Taiga. Can I come in?"
Wataru's confusion is written clearly on his face, and Taiga can understand why. Wataru has no reason to know who his King is or even why his King would be visiting him. "Sure. Did you come about a violin? Or a viola? Or some other stringed instrument?"
"Actually, I came to talk to you about your mother." He says this with a certainty that he doesn't feel. What he wants to do is embrace Wataru, assure him that everything will be all right, that he is the most precious of Taiga's subjects except for Taiga's missing Queen. Taiga wants to find her too, but for the moment, that can wait. In the meantime, this is his brother. The most important person in his life.
"My mother?" Wataru blinks. "What about my mother?" He stands there, just confused, and Taiga steps forward. "Please. Inside?"
Wataru nods after a moment. "Okay," he says, and leads Taiga through the door, upstairs to a room full of violins and violin parts. He remembers being told that his mother knew how to make violins, and Wataru had obviously learned that from her. "What do you want to know about my mother? She left when I was very little...."
The hurt on Wataru's face is plain and clear and matches his own. His heart goes out for this little brother of his whose only fault is that he's half human, something that Taiga wishes he could fix for Wataru but he can't. "I know. You... you are my little brother. Our mother deserted me as a baby." He's sure his own pain is clear to Wataru, but the other doesn't remark. "I think I've been looking my entire life for you."
"But... but..." Wataru looks at him. "But she never mentioned anything about an older brother!"
Taiga tries to think of something that would convince him that he's telling the truth. He probably thinks Taiga is some kind of fraudster, and Taiga doesn't blame him. He looks up, seeking inspiration, when he catches sight of a Kivat trying to hide itself on the wall.
"That's a Kivat, isn't it?" Taiga said, pointing as the Kivat yelps and Wataru stares at him. "I know about them. They are servants of the Royal Family."
Wataru just stares at him. Taiga wishes he'd come up with something better, but at least it's *something*. "Kivat?"
The Kivat flies down, flapping in the air, regarding Taiga. "He could be what he says he is," it says gruffly. Taiga wishes he knew what would convince Wataru and the Kivat, especially the Kivat.
And then he remembers. He unlatches his glove, pulls it off, holds it up and hopes that Wataru doesn't run, because that's what any sane person would do if the King took off the glove in their presence. But it's his chance to convince Wataru that he's King and should be listened to.
Wataru, amazingly, doesn't run. But he doesn't seem to recognize Taiga's Mark, either, so he just stands there, uncomprehending. "King," the Kivat says, and Wataru starts, apparently recognizing Taiga's position.
"Yes. I am King. And your older brother, Wataru." He states this plainly, hoping that Wataru can accept it and accept *him*. "I've come to take care of you like a big brother should."
"My... brother is the Fangire King?" And the way Wataru pronounces "Fangire" seems to indicate that he doesn't think he's one.
Taiga's heart seems to stop beating for a moment, the muscles in his chest tightening. Wataru sees himself as human. His delusional mother twisted his little brother into her insane beliefs. "Yes."
"Kivat?" Wataru asks, turning to the Kivat. "Is what he says...."
"True?" the Kivat asks in return. "It's very possible, Wataru. Very possible. He has the Mark of King."
Wataru nods, staring at Taiga, fearful. Taiga strides forward, embracing his little brother, making an internal promise that he would make up for what their mother did, that he'd protect Wataru from the world. "Wataru. You don't have to make up your mind now. But think about it. I'm your brother. And nothing's going to change that." He lets his younger brother go and gets out his business card - he barely remembers sometimes that he has them - and hands it to Wataru. "Please. Call me. And don't be afraid."
He hopes that Wataru won't be. Because he is part of Wataru's life now and Wataru is part of his and nothing will change that. Wataru will be Fanire - Taiga will teach him - and they will be like the brothers they were always intended to be.
Staring at Wataru one more time, hoping to be encouraging, he walks out. But only for the moment.
