*Facepalms* Um, yeah, why do you think I just gave the selfupdate command?
For those who don't venture into command lines: I'm telling the command "port" (macports, which gives me access to a ton of unix/linux software with one easy command; it's similar to apt-get, for those in the Debian/Ubuntu world) to update its list of files, and "sudo" is basically giving me special authority for that command only to do things I can't do on my regular user level.
