Upon occasion, I try to get an idea of what stories have hit the “top 5″ for Fanfiction.net and AO3. Here’s the results, under cut.

Fanfiction.net:

Stories, top 5 by average hit per chapter:
1. Inside Out (1908 hits) (Power Rangers Wild Force/Time Force)
2. Waiting Period (1556) (Power Rangers Wild Force/Time Force)
3. Blushing Bride (1507) (Power Rangers Wild Force/Time Force)
4. Losing Touch (1354) (Power Rangers Dino Thunder)
5. Information (1304) (Power Rangers Ninja Storm)

Top hits:
1. Building Family (18072 hits) (Power Rangers Ninja Storm)
2. Inside Out (13361 hits) (Power Rangers Wild Force/Time Force)
3. Blushing Bride (9047) (Power Rangers Wild Force/Time Force)
4. Waiting Period (6226) (Power Rangers Wild Force/Time Force)
5. Losing Touch (5418) (Power Rangers Dino Thunder)

A03:
Top hits, all:
1. Versal And Marginalia (713 hits) (Mulan)
2. Loki and the Cup of Jonar (272) (Norse Mythology)
3. A Most Content Husband (234) (Gokusen TV)
4. The One Left Out (The Grumpy Genius Remix) (182) (Power Rangers Ninja Storm)
5. Songuisendus Anuncemise (179) (Mulan)

Top hits, stories not written for AO3 challenges (that is, non-remix/Yuletide)
1. If You Know What To Look For (75 hits) (Power Rangers Ninja Storm and characters from Mighty Morphing Power Rangers)
2. Keeping Up Appearances (66) (Charmed/Power Rangers Dino Thunder)
3. Fatherly Love (63) (Power Rangers Ninja Storm)
4. Wherein, Misunderstandings (56) (Power Rangers Ninja Storm)
5. Dance of Fireflies (54) (Highlander: The Raven)

Top hits, stories not co-written/in shared universes:
1. Dance of Fireflies (54 hits) (Highlander: The Raven)
2. Li Ne Estas (53) (Time Force, language: Esperanto)
3. Bonded Automatons and Zombies (49) (Kamen Rider Double)
4. You Are Here (46) (Doctor Who (classic))
5. He in Her Daydreams (44) (Earth: Final Conflict)
5. Deziras Penti (44) (Starman (tv)/Kamen Rider Blade, language: Esperanto)

Looking at these, I can tell that my FFn hits are, of course, biased towards some of my oldest fics (because some of them have been on there around nine years), and one fic that is probably popular because it’s Kira/Conner. “Information” wanders into my top 5 by average because while “Building Family” has a lot of hits, it doesn’t really average a whole lot per chapter.

(To give an idea of how my recent fics fare there, the Power Rangers RPM “Harder To Be Brave” storyline has averaged (per chapter) 60 hits (Holding Boxes) to 198 hits (Easier to Hide), and “The Dreamt-of Call” is at 70 hits. “Better To Ask Forgiveness” (Hana Yori Dango) has 257 hits, and “Camping, Again” (Final Fantasy II) has 57. “Better To Ask Forgiveness” took a long while to get off the front page of the Hana Yori Dango section; its hit count on AO3, where it was posted for Yuletide, is 106.)

On the AO3 side, I have been there since very late 2009, when open beta started. I get my heaviest hits from challenge responses (mostly Yuletide) – that one Mulan fic is not going to get topped anytime soon! The next highest tend to be co-writes, which I attribute to tptigger’s fantastic writing ability and the fact that the “Building Family” series is well-loved. When I filter those out as well, the fics that end up in my top five (with a tie) are a variety of fandoms – from the well-known Doctor Who to the less-known Earth: Final Conflict and Highlander: The Raven. Plus, two of them are in Esperanto – wonder who’s hitting those? (“Li Ne Estas” has a comment, which tends to help with hit count, but all the comment says is (more or less) “Hi! We added Esperanto to the pull-down for languages!”)

ETA:
Top 3 hits (non-averaged) for February, January, and December on FFN:

February:
1. Sunrises, Sunsets, and Precut Muffins
2. Easier To Hide
3. Holding Boxes

January:
1. Better To Ask Forgiveness
2. Inside Out
3. Holding Family

December:
1. Building Family
2. The Unstuck Country (Kamen Rider Kiva)
3. Camping, Again

I argue the cowrites do better because our writing is synergistic: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. (I'll tag you back as soon as I'm awake enough :)
