Yuletide reveals!
Jan. 2nd, 2019 08:21 pmIt turns out that my four gifts were written by three people (one person wrote me two!). Kathillards wrote my main gift in Kamen Rider Drive, FireEye wrote the Fatal Frame fic and one of my two Final Fantasy II fics (the shorter one), and Ysavvryl wrote the other Final Fantasy II fic (the longer one).
(FireEye and I have written for each other several times in various fandoms, and I wrote a Rune Factory 4 pinch hit for Ysavvryl year before last. I was surprised to find that kathillards and I, though we share quite a few fandoms, have never written for each other.)
I wrote four fics this year for Yuletide, 3 in main and 1 in madness:
* Selfie (Wilde Life (Comic))
* Gadzookery (Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death - Frances Glesner Lee)
* NeoBlastic (Castlevania (Cartoon))
* Insolate (Magical Diary (Visual Novel))
Selfie: I matched with Toe on the Zero Escape video game series, and tried to write fic, but I couldn't really come up with a plot. I had much more luck with "Wilde Life", a webcomic which I read because I like to meet my recipient's other fandoms. I really loved the character of Sylvia and so I ended up writing about her! I did research on female "computers" of the early 20th century, and discovered that they calculated ballistics tables.
The Polaroid camera was a big thing when I was growing up, so I figure the little kids she mentions in one page are probably a little younger than me (or maybe about a decade younger than me)!
Sylvia kept rambling on me, so I trimmed some of the fic and then had Oscar coming in and her pondering that and interacting with him, which worked really well! My recipient seemed to like this approach, so I'm very happy with that.
Gadzookery: I love the Nutshells! I think I met them over twenty years ago, in one of my Mom's books (which, unfortunately, we don't have anymore). I picked this up as a pinch hit and I think the recipient liked it! Which is good, because I had to run with the first plot I had very very fast because I didn't have much time.
I did have fun researching for this fic. I researched forensics in the 1940s, department stores, the Time of Day service (we know it nowadays as the phone number where you could call and get the time), what Mr. Barnes could have been picking up for his wife, why he could be there at 4 pm on a weekday (the given day was a Tuesday), and exactly how heavy a pickling crock was (though the victim was actually hit over the head with her own rolling pin). I did make two errors: I misread the clues on the Death in Diorama web site (I thought that there was a pin on the window) and McCrory's, which I remember from when I was much much younger, was more a five-and-dime and not a standard department store, and therefore would not have been carrying something that would have been $10 (the pickling crock).
Neoblastic: I liked what I saw of Lisa in the first season of the show, and when I saw her few appearances in the second season I knew that I wanted to write her. Fortunately, there were two people asking for her with Vlad. I could have written for either of them, but it came out more of her pondering how to record the information and then having a lovely, bittersweet but fluffy talk with her husband. It seems to have worked, because it was the most-hit and commented on of my fics. (It was also the largest of my fandoms, which helped).
Insolate: Magical Diary is the one fandom I've written in before. I wanted to write this little fic because I adore Virginia, and her being asexual was right up my alley. Upon canon review, I found that she was pretty much aromantic as well, which made it a bit harder since I am definitely not, but I did manage a bit of a ficlet because I really love Virgina's path and the revelation in it, and how she deals (or doesn't deal).
