Dear Yuletide Writer (and other interested folks),
Ah, Yuletide's happening again! I've got some old requests and some new requests so have fun with them. Most of my requests this year are video games with varying average completion times (15-68 hours) but Let's Plays are not hard to find. I'm estirose on AO3 as well.
General Likes: Fluff! Wingfic, curtainfic, cheery coffeeshop AUs, found family, that's kind of what I'm in the mood for this year. I like gen, slash, femslash, and het (and will note on each entry about any ships I do/don't go for).
DNW: Humiliation. Sexual kinks related to urination and/or defecation. Vore. Incest involving parental figures and children (including aunts and uncles) and male/female siblings or cousins. Covid-19 or current real-world politics. Sex involving preteens and younger. Noncon.
I'm okay with: A/B/O (though I prefer worldbuilding over porn), dubcon (where judgement is impaired or consent is given under false circumstances), poly relationships, and fictional diseases (so if you're writing MTaP, mentioning/discussing Ginger's illness is fine).
Ratings: I'm good with general through explicit. I don't have any explicit prompts but if you find your fic going that way I'm fine with explicit sex scenes.
Crossovers: I love them! I prefer them to be in fandoms I'm familiar with, however. (Basically, anything that I've written on AO3 before.) From this year's tagset, I'd also be fine with characters from Enola Holmes or On a Sunbeam showing up in any of my fandoms.
A note about my prompts: If I don't mention a requested character in a prompt, you do not have to include them in a story using that prompt. (For example, if I requested Stardew Valley, with characters Shane and Maru, but a prompt only mentions Maru, you don't have to include Shane in the story unless you want to.) If you ODAO, I'd really like it if all of the requested characters at least show up/get mentioned.
And now onto the fandoms!
Slime Rancher (video game) (Requested: Beatrix Lebeau)
"I hope the sunsets there are as gorgeous as they are over here and that if you search far enough on a rainy day some rancher out there has a taco stand you can visit."
About: You play as a young rancher named Beatrix (you can't customize name or appearance) who has chosen to travel lightyears away from Earth to ranch alien creatures named slimes, collect their plorts, and sell the plorts for a profit. Along the way, you get to explore a fairly open world, meet slimes both benign and dangerous, and learn more about the person who used to own the ranch you now live on.
Why I love: Slime Rancher and its slimes are excessively cute (if you are a cat lover, just wait until you meet the tabby slimes). There's no game over - the worst thing that happens is you get yourself knocked out by aggressive slimes or fall into the Slime Sea and have to wake up to very hungry slimes on your ranch. There's a ton of exploring to do, especially after you get your jetpack upgrade, because there are a lot of nooks and crannies hidden all over the place.
And you don't have to explore! You can take your time on your ranch, maybe going out once in a while to get some extra slimes or plorts. If you want a challenge, there's a mode for that, and if you just want to have cute slimes bouncing around your ranch without worrying about certain events (read: The Tarr), there's a mode for that too. I have a save where my whole goal was to get a full set of Hunter largos bouncing around the Grotto!
I chose Beatrix because I love her. I love her friendship/relationship with Casey. I love her love of the outdoors that fits so well with the exploration you are doing. I also love that as the avatar for the PC, she doesn't have any particular canon feelings about Hobson, her neighbors, or the slimes so that the player doesn't feel constrained about any choices they make on the ranch.
Shipping: I don't have any strong feelings on this. I slightly ship Beatrix/Casey (and prefer agender or female Casey), and the canon Hobson romance.
Prompts:
* Something set pre-game about Beatrix's decision to come to the Far, Far Range. We get some information about it, but not a whole lot about why she decided to pretty much spend the rest of her life herding slimes.
* Beatrix's view on ranching slimes. What she thinks of them, what slimes/largos are her favorites, and so on.
* A typical (or atypical) day of Beatrix's life, whether ranching, exploring, or something else. Maybe she spends it in The Wilds, or wants to enjoy Viktor's Slimeulation.
* Beatrix's correspondence with Casey. We know from at least one of Casey's letters that she does send them letters.
* Beatrix dreams that Casey came with her to the Far, Far Range. What would she dream of? What would she think that their life would be like?
* One of Beatrix's neighbours/fellow ranchers on the Far, Far Range is from another fandom. Who are they and what do they request? What is Beatrix's relationship with them?
Where to get: Slime Rancher is available on the PS4, XBox, and PC. For those interested in playing, Howlongtobeat.com says it's about 15 hours on average to beat the game (without any extras or doing a completionist run).
Other: A review of the game with some gameplay video and my fics for this fandom.
My Time at Portia (video game) (Requested: Petra, Nora)
"The snow melts. The smell of flowers is in the air. Do you notice it? It's the best gift that mother nature can give us."
About: Your estranged father has given you his old workshop in the city of Portia. Your job is to build things - everything from basic axes and stone furnaces to advanced machinery and planes. (Well, one plane.) In the meantime, there's a whole town of people to get to know and maybe even fall in love with.
Why I love: My gosh. I fell in love with this game when it was still being crowdfunded and I bought early access. Like the rest of the games on this list, you can play it any way you want (apart from a few time-limited main storyline bits). You can spend your day gathering resources, talking to NPCs, fighting monsters, or putting together commissions for money + reputation. For example, usually get my first three machines up as fast as I can and running and then spend half of the first month fishing to get more money.
There are tons of events that you can either participate in or ignore (I ignore the Land Run every year, for example). NPC dialogue is somewhat repetitive but I like all the characters regardless (even Lee and Higgins to some extent). You can romance any of the marriageable characters regardless of gender. It's a mostly-cheerful game considering it's set after the world has been destroyed. It makes me happy every time I play it.
I'm choosing Petra and Nora this year because they are the reasonable voices of the Research Center and the Church of the Light. I have to confess, I am not fond of Lee and never converse with him unless I have to, but Nora's words and missions made me more sympathetic to the Church as a whole. I've married Nora but haven't yet romanced Petra, but I've read Petra's romance dialogue and mission on the wiki. I love that Nora does what's right despite what Lee forbids, and I love that Petra's love of science and the challenges means that she's never grumpy about the fact that you're bringing her data discs and expecting her to research all the time.
Shipping: This probably won't come up in any story, but Builder or Nora romances (or any romance, really) with Minister Lee do nothing for me. Ditto for Merlin, who is pretty much an Aro Ace in canon. Builders of any gender are fine.
Prompts:
* Nora and Petra get to talking about the issues between the Church and the Research Center, and find they have more in common than they thought, leading to romance.
* I'd like to see more about what led Nora to Portia and her first few days. She does say that she had to learn to slow down and enjoy things.
* Nora calls on the Builder to help deliver some aid packages while Lee is sick. Why does she trust the Builder to help out rather than asking someone else?
* When does Petra get any sleep? It seems like every time a mission comes up to improve the town, everybody goes to Petra. I'd like her thoughts on this.
* Petra convinces Gale to build a library for Portia and becomes its first formal librarian.
* If you romance Nora as a builder, she will propose to you. I'd love an extended version of this (possibly with Petra), from her decision to propose to maybe spending the day with her love.
* I'd really like to see a day in the life of either Nora or Petra.
* If you're so inclined, I'd love to see Miku from the Fatal Frame games end up as the builder or an NPC in Portia, because in some ways her function in Fatal Frame III is pretty much like Petra's, except she researches folklore and news articles instead of blueprints.
Where to get: Available on PC, Switch, Xbox One, Playstation 4. (I seriously recommend getting it on the PC if at all possible! PC gets bug fixes and new content more often than console.) Howlongtobeat.com says it has an average completion of 68-69 hours for the main story.
Other: A review of this game with some gameplay video and my fics for this fandom.
Fantasy Life (video game) (Requested: Taylor, Madam Purl, Player Character)
"La la la lippity loppity lair, This is indeed a strange pair...."
About: As a young person living in the city of Castele, you are about to enter your new Life (profession, in other words). Congratulations! Except on your first day, you meet a butterfly who speaks and you eventually find out that your destiny is far greater than you expect.
Why I love: Though this game has an overarching plot that you can advance, the focus of it is not on saving the world, but advancing in the various professions as you want. More interested in becoming a Master or Legendary cook than saving the world? That's fine! Want to look good at when you celebrate saving the world? Become a tailor so you can make your own clothes! Want just your typical RPG experience with a little gathering and crafting on the side? That's a perfectly good way to play.
Despite the world potentially ending, it's a place where none of the NPCs are truly malicious, the disaster is not because of a villain's schemes, and you can nearly do a pacifist run through the main story. The dialogue is fun and often kind of snarky (and even philosophical at times).
I adore sweet shipper-on-deck Taylor and that's an aspect of her I'd love to see more of (plus, conversations with Taylor about the Tailor Life that you wouldn't want to have with Madam Purl or anyone else). Madam Purl is a strong advocate of life-work balance, but for some reason her home is in Porto Puerto and that is weird. I love that the player's experience, and the player character's, is just full of friends and happy times and just a bunch of kind people trying to save the world.
Shipping: I'd prefer Player Character/Yuelia or Player Character/Damien and have no feelings about a Taylor or Madam Purl romance with either (or with anyone else; if you want to crackship Damien or Celestia with Taylor, that's fine with me!). I do ask that, given their relationship, that there is no Taylor/Madam Purl.
Prompts:
* A day in the Life of a Castele tailor: Because of video game limitations, of course Taylor, Madam Purl, Zippy, and Spoolie are in set places. But why does Taylor spend all day outside the chapel? Does Madam Purl ever visit her actual home in Porto Puerto? Do Zippy and Spoolie have lives outside their work?
* On the worldbuilding side, where do all these people live? There are only a few houses in each town, and nobody seems to go home at night.
* Taylor does matchmaking! In canon she obviously ships Zippy/Chic, who else does she ship and how does she try to get them together?
* How did Madam Purl get to be the Master she is in the game? What's her relationship with her children? Her grandchild?
* Why did the Player Character choose their initial life? Was one of their parents a cook, a blacksmith, a paladin? Where are their parents anyway, since they live alone in a space rented to them by Pam. Are they following in family footsteps or are they choosing something totally different?
* The Player Character (or Taylor, via whatever parent is not the child of Madam Purl, or Madam Purl if you want to be) turns out to be Al Maajik nobility, and possibly eligible to marry Damien. How do they handle this?
Where to get: Nintendo 3DS only. Howlongtobeat.com says you can finish the main game in 32 hours on average.
Other: A review with gameplay, the North American version of the Tailor Life introductory quest where you meet Madam Purl and Taylor, and my fics for the fandom.
A Little Sweet - YWY2 A Little Sweet Stage Group B (Youth With You Performance) (Requested: no characters)
"I want to enjoy scenery with you/I want to leave countless footprints with you/I want to do romantic things with you/Let you feel I am fantastic"
About: This is a performance from the Chinese web show "Youth With You 2". The show was a competition where 109 performers (trainees) competed to become one of nine performers in a new 9-member idol group. Every two weeks or so the trainees got assigned (or chose) to sing different songs in a group with other trainees.
The names that show up on screen are the performing trainees/trainees in the audience/mentors (and Kun, who is kind of a mentor?). I'm not looking for RPF so you can safely ignore the names on the screen and don't have to know anything about them.
Why I love: I got into Youth with You because there were two trainees from a group I really liked. It turned out to be a very heartwarming (and sometimes heartwrenching) show that was exactly what I needed in early-mid 2020. The performers were sweethearts, funny, and performed on stage so well! It aired twice a week and sometimes it was a long wait until the next episode.
This particular performance is my favorite, because it's so upbeat and cheerful and kind of shippy (and reminds me of happy 1950s-set musicals). Whenever I've had a bad day I watch it because the performers and the song are really sweet. In some ways, it embodies what I love about the entire show itself and that makes me happy.
Shipping: No canon characters, so I don't have any ships I like or oppose here.
Prompts:
* I see a pair of lovebirds (the characters played by Bubble Zhu and Marco Lin), their friends (the rest of the performers), and some bystanders (the audience and mentors) commenting on them/their relationship. I'd love a story from the POV of any of the above. Maybe one of the pair and pursuing their relationship, maybe one of their friends encouraging them, or a bystander just shipping these random two people! Or maybe just a whole thing on how these five characters are just belting out this song to a random audience.
* Imagine the whole group (or at least the performer group) playing with kittens. What kind of kittens would catch their attention and how did they end up with kittens anyway?
* Maybe you interpret the performance completely differently! I'd love to see your take on the story of the performance. Hopefully something cute/fluffy!
(Note: Marco Lin is a cisgender woman but I'm fine with whatever gender you want to use for her character.)
Where to get: On Youtube, enable closed captions for English. About 5 minutes long.
Other: I put together a post of links to other performances by the trainees in this group for those curious.
