Pokemon Crystal

estiroseSo, I finally got Pokemon Crystal on my 2DS. (I plan to get Ultra Moon at some point, along with anything else I can.) Yes, I have bought a 21-23 year old Pokemon game. All I know is that this was the gen that Murkrow was introduced in.
I just started today and have been wandering around aimlessly. Currently I have a Bellsprout named Lovely, a Totodile (my starter) named Delphi, a Spinarak named Spindeln, and a Hoothoot named Cheep. Trying to grind my crew up to level 11 or 12, which should be a decent level for the first gym. (Doing a lot of grinding as I went into some sort of temple at one of the towns and the first monk really did a number on my crew.)
So, currently I'm trying to get my third gym badge. Emphasis on "try", as the leader of this gym has been kicking my rear end. (Said leader's 2nd pokemon is memerific if you're familiar with the anime - or even if you're not familiar with the anime.) I did some research and it looks like fighter-types are the best, but I don't have one of those, so next best for this fight is rock.
In the meantime, I've gone through several towns, made some acquaintances, been challenged by a bunch of trainers, run across some of the bad guys of this game, and rescued some slowpokes (the pokemon, not people).
My current crew is temporary crew member Calcite (a level 13 Onix - a rock-type - that will be used to defeat gym 3), Delphi (my now level 19 Croconaw, evolved from Totodile), Lovely (my now level 21 Bellsprout), Spindeln (my now level 17 Spinarak), Scream (my level 18 Zubat), and Lucy (my level 20 Snubbull). I currently have Cheep (my Hoothoot) at the Pokemon Daycare while I level up Calcite and beat the 3rd gym.
Got another team member, swapping out Lovely (the bellsprout)! Also, through some nice RNG finally beat that third gym leader. Fourth was easy by comparison. Finally got surf. I'm helping out a gym leader on the mainland and they asked me to go and get some medication for a sick Pokemon, so off to the island level.
The island gym leader is currently kicking my team's rear end, so making use of the maze on the way to the island to grind.
So, current crew is: Delphi (level 25 Croconaw), Spindeln (level 25 Aridos, evolved from Spinarak), Lucy (level 26 level Granbull, evolved from Snubbull), Shaky (my new member, a 26th level Sudowoodo), Cheep (level 25 Noctowl, evolved from Hoothoot) and Scream (level 25 Golbat, evolved from Zubat).
