estiroseAt the Nintendo Direct today it was announced that the 4th game in the series, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, is getting released on Switch (and apparently all the same consoles (and Steam) that Maiden of Black Water was)! Whee! Apparently Maiden of Black Water sold enough that Koei Tecmo was willing to port a second game. It makes me feel that buying Maiden of Black Water and its DLC was worth it.
For those not in the Fatal Frame/Project Zero fandom, this is why we're all really really excited:
* This was a Wii game. The Wii has been out of production for several years at this point.
* The game was never localized outside Japan.(There were plans for Europe that fell through at a late stage which is why we have a canon English title.) (I'm not sure at this point if Koei Tecmo just made the commonly used subtitle official or if that's been it's official title for quite some time.)
* There is an English-language patch that also takes care of the region lock, but it requires a legal Japanese game disk and a willingness to softmod your Wii (which breaks your warranty).
Now, unlike the port of Maiden of Black Water, which had voice acting in languages other than Japanese, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse doesn't. So we'll see if more voice acting is added - it's not coming out until sometime next year so we have time.
(Also... er, Steam? Why do you think "this game does not look like other things you've played in the past" when I own two Resident Evil games and another Fatal Frame game on your platform?)
ETA: I don't know who owns the rights to the first three games, but I'm hopeful if Black Water and Lunar Eclipse do well that maybe we'll get the Wii port/remake of 2? I know there are some people who don't like the British VAs in the Wii port/remake, but I liked everybody except Itsuki (also, easier to get some upgrades in the port/remake, but the. darn. ghost. hands. They started in Lunar Eclipse and showed up again in the 2 port/remake and Black Water. Fandom absolutely hates them.) Getting Spirit Camera would be nice but it's a Nintendo 3DS AR game so that would be really hard to port. It's probably the least scary of the Fatal Frame games, though, relatively speaking.
