Date: 2011-08-14 08:44 pm (UTC)Of me, my siblings and their kids, yes, I'm the only native speaker of English (my older half-sister speaks some English, my younger half-sister less, but it's not their native language, and it shows). Among the rest of my family, most of us are native English speakers (it's a long story on how all this happened).
Basically, to sum up what I know of the story, there are some people who are more than a little uncomfortable with non-English writing on DW, and other people were pissed off at those people, and a festival was proposed to have more non-English content. Along the way, there was great debate on whether to include anyone who could write in a language that wasn't English, or people whose native language wasn't English. It's kind of evolved into a whole festival in order to make more people who aren't native speakers feel comfortable on DW.

As for the non-English postings... meh? I can't imagine why people posting in a language other than English would bother people, so I'm already lost. I feel like posting in another language, now, just for the sake of it... which I'm assuming is what you did?

I'm not sure on why. I have a suspicion that it may partly be because a lot of the posts are in Russian/the Cyrillic alphabet, and apparently a lot of the problems with Livejournal have to do with DDOSes against the Russian side, so people may be worried that we might have problems. At least that's what I'd like to think, because not wanting to see non-english posts on DW is otherwise I think pretty silly.
ANd yes, I kind of wrote the post in Esperanto just to have a little fun with the people who don't like non-English postings. *wry grin* Between it and some promotion of my esperantofanfic comm, there's a slight upsurge in Esperanto on DW, and I really like that.
(Now I get to go and write a reply to the nice person who wrote a comment on one of my Esperanto Kamen Rider Kiva fics!)
