Got it done!

I've been working on a transcription (more or less) with screenshots, of Final Fantasy II. It's here: http://dots.estirose.net/nonfiction/ffii-dialogue.html
Some thoughts, after transcribing that hulking (70k in text+75k in pictures) thing, which I wrote because I wanted to have people actually offer the fandom this year for Yuletide.
I spent quite a bit of time running about, including getting some dialogue that I hadn't known existed, with the exception of a few mentions. This included a line of dialogue between a sailor in Poft and Maria, and two sets of dialogue between Ricard and the inhabitants of Deist. And one comment from a mage in Mysidia about Minwu, which is all the mourning he gets outside the party. Oh, and I found out if you go to the throne room after calling the Wyvern but before entering the Cyclone, Hilda comments on the fact.
Also, I don't quite play the game in order, so some things are actually rearranged from my screenshots: I usually visit the Tropical Island so I get to Mysidia (which until this playthrough, I thought was called "Mystidia"). And obviously whoever wrote the trigger for Paul's last speech before the ending doesn't care if you've gotten the information about the Jade Passage/Pandaemonium from Hilda and Gordon, because I got dialogue regarding that from him long before I got to Hilda and Gordon, but it's transcribed in the guide until after the visit to them.
Another thing I found out was that, having looked at a ton of screenshots, the people who translated the game were very fond of ellipses and capitals that didn't make sense. They also made the Emperor's name lowercase most of the time. So, I smoothed things out for those sentences so I didn't have capitals in the middle of the sentence that weren't on proper nouns, removed a few ellipses where they didn't make sense.
All the graphics are about a width of 384 because I wanted them slightly smaller than actual size (faster loading time). This turned out to be a good thing, because my later screenshots were about 1.5 times the size of my original ones.
I changed iOS devices mid-game, but it's hard to tell. Unfortunately, my second playthrough of the game was played on a device that was crashing and having problems with its load files - the first time it lost the "Wyvern" keyword when I still needed it, and I had to go back to an earlier savepoint to get to the right point. (It also misplaced a few elixirs in one dungeon.)
I had quite forgotten in Maria's storyline that there's a scene after Palamecia where she wonders if she can go on. Also in her storyline, at the end of the game, there's a great desire on her part for them to go back to their normal lives and pretend nothing went wrong - something Firion points out as not possible anymore, especially for Leon. Maria obviously spent an entire game having to deal with a big evil, but what she really wanted was her family to be safe and back to normal. She's not an adventurer, but she protects her own.
Also, I would not be surprised at all if Firion and the others get titles - at least Firion, Maria, and Guy.

Date: 2011-11-02 02:04 am (UTC)At least someone did a decent one for Soul of Rebirth, which saved me from having to write that up.
Now I go to immerse myself in Final Fantasy III. :)
