Of the four fics, I wrote "From whose hands we never quite escape" first and "Cake and Growth" last. (In sequence, I wrote the fandoms in the following order: Fatal Frame, Questor Tapes/Starman, Highlander, and Gokaiger). Of the five series represented, two are purely American series, one is an Canadian/French co-production, one is a Japanese game translated to English, and one is a Japanese series.

I wanted to start off with a birthday/anniversary theme, and decided that I should post in reverse order by year produced. So, the Gokaiger fic had to be about anniversaries, which of course ended up with Ahim, Gai, and cake. I'm trying to get away from writing Gai so heavily, but he was really the only one that I'd imagine being excited about an anniversary in the crew, so he got to do the cake.

The second fic, the Fatal Frame one, was the only fic I planned to post at all. It started as a POV swap for my fan_flashworks story "Taken by the Hands", and kind of went way off from there thanks to a thread on the Cameras Lens forums about what would have happened if Miku died. It turns out I'd misheard a very important line listening to someone's playthrough (and of the series, FF I is the only one without subtitles). I had Kirie forget that her lover was dead, and his name, because one was never given in the series and the other fouled up my premise. Which could be retconned away easily because she could have easily forgotten in the last few centuries in her pain. So, she mistakes Mafuyuu for her dead lover, decides to make him a ghost, and he keeps repeating his last few days of life (wandering around the mansion, etc). Miku does the same. The person who comes after Miku and Mafuyu is Yuu of Fatal Frame III, and Kirie of course kills him.

I wanted to write a Highlander fic for my third one, so I headed off to Hulu to pick an episode. I'm still not sure how nobody in the Watchers seemed to have realized what Duncan was looking for, but then again, he was pretty random. Still managed to surprise Joe Dawson to an extent. I chose that scene where Duncan walks into the bookstore as a basis for a fic.

The fourth was kind of cliched crossover, but I was rereading the novelization for "Questor Files" and thought how similar it was to Starman in a way. I tried to figure out what Questor's friend, Mr. Robinson, was doing after a decade, and decided it would be nice to have him play social studies teacher. He mentions the whole "flying to London without a passport" thing, which if I remember the TV movie correctly, did happen in it, though the only hacking Questor did was literally tearing out a wall. I looked up modem speeds in 1986 (I'm getting adept at looking up stuff for the 1986-1987 time period), and pretty much most modems circa 1986-7 were 300 baud/bps. That's about 426 times slower than the slowest DSL lines today, and 186 times slower than the fastest 56k dialup modem. There's mention of Hope, a character from one of my other fanfics, making this a semi-sequel to "Not a Hope".
