Saw Ghostbusters!
Jul. 24th, 2016 06:39 pmNon-spoilery: It was great! It didn't gross me out, it kept the plot moving, it didn't trigger my humiliation squick (which I thought it would), and the climax was so good.
Plot-wise, it was, apart from one moment where I was confused, quite good. I'm still not sure why Erin didn't try calling everybody, but it did create a nice scene where she rescues the rest of them from the Marshmallow Man. And then everybody kicked ass! One or two of the team needed to be rescued (Holtzmann from the possessed Abby, Erin rescuing the others, and of course, getting Kevin free from the Big Bad), but it wasn't men rescuing women, which I thought was terrific. The movie of course passed Bechdel, even if there were various conversations about male department heads, the villain of the piece, and of course Kevin.
The Ghostbusters were shown learning from their mistakes, and even if I did not like Holtzmann (her character type drives me up the wall), her devices made sense and they were used to great effect in the climax. This does not include the venus flytrap-like device in the trailer(s), because you see that only in the credits.
There was some kid-appeal gross-out slime, mostly on Erin (poor gal). Slimer was in the movie for about twenty seconds and I thought he and his "date" were cute rather than loathsome. I did catch two cameos from former Ghostbusters cast and I think I caught a third. (One skeptic, one cabbie, and was that the original receptionist working at the hotel?)
Character-wise, I thought I would love one of the others more, but the one that I came out of the theater wishing I'd gotten more of was Patty. Her talks about the history of the city and the various places came out more as the enthusiasm of someone who was really into them rather than exposition. The trailers made her sound like she knew New York in a completely different way and it was really more about she loved her city and she loved the history of it and would be completely at home at a New York history convention. I am, personality-wise, a cross between her and Erin - Erin's anxieties and Patty's love of history.
(Incidentally, the trailers lie, a lot, and not just about Patty and the venus flytrap machine. I'm not a big fan of comedies, but this was just as much about women bonding and learning and being awesome as it is about Erin being slimed a lot.)
