Just say 'excuse me please' and move to sit down beside them... it actually works, because it surprises them.
There are a lot of tough young guys on my bus in the mornings, and it seems like everyone just lets them take up two seats or sit with their legs wide open and a seat separating them. I just excuse myself and sit down. They don't actually care.
