This came to mind because a) I was watching this awesome documentary re the making of the Cozy Grove games and b) starting canon review for Yuletide, which has nothing to do with Cozy Grove, but sometimes my brain goes in weird directions.
(Status on Yuletide: Reviewing canon. My recipient has several prompts that I want to write and I need to narrow that down a bit - but first I need to canon review some stuff so I can write them a hopefully kickass fic!)
I will come out and say it: I don't trust Netflix with the precious game studio that is Spry Fox. I'm sorry. They cancel things at the drop of a hat - maybe not their games, but they've cancelled enough good shows produced for them that I'm afraid that the same thing will happen to Spry Fox. I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. But right now... yeah. I get that Spry Fox desperately needed to be bought out, but that is the frigging worst choice that they could have made.
So why am I not buying a Netflix subscription and playing Camp Spirits? It's... complicated.
Look, I'm not beyond supporting a company I do like even though they chose a platform I don't like... I really don't like Nintendo, but I plan to get a Switch to play Fantasy Life i/Dekapolice/possible Yo-Kai Watch. I may be figuring out a way to do so without benefiting Nintendo any more than I have to, but I like Level-5 and want to support their comeback in the west more than I hate Nintendo. So.
But Netflix? I swore never to go back to them because of their whole password crackdown. And unlike them (they did a whole "sharing is caring" blurb a couple years back regarding sharing passwords) I try not to be a hypocrite.
Look, I'm not a big fan of password sharing for security reasons. But family members (blood or otherwise) sharing a subscription even if they live miles - or kilometers - apart? I really don't mind. I fully believe that Netflix benefited from this arrangement too.
And then they got greedy. They decided that the sweet, sweet cash of making households that were spread out pay for another subscription.
Maddeningly, people did, they posted record profit, and now everybody else wants to follow in their footsteps. I'm down to 2 1/2 streaming services (I've temporarily picked up Crunchyroll for moar potential Yuletide treats) because everybody sees dollar signs instead of caring about, you know, the FREAKING PEOPLE WHO PAY FOR THEIR STREAMING SERVICES. So I'm kind of also pissed off at the consumers who contributed to a consumer-unfriendly practice.
Ahem. Yelling there a bit.
In any case, I have met a little of Camp Spirits? I'm glad that people seem to like it and I'm glad that Spry Fox did a good job as usual. But I'm not playing it. And I don't want to be spoiled other than what I've allowed myself to be (mostly the Discord when I was still on it, maybe a blog post - not sure about that one - and the documentary I linked above). I hope someday that it's accessible somewhere other than Netflix because I refuse to support them. And the day it is, I'll be playing it along with everybody else.
